TF2 on Ubuntu

Well seeing as Windows 7 RC is up soon I’m going to be formatting and reinstalling my OS.
I’d love to use Ubuntu, but not sure how it’ll run. Does anyone here us it and how does it work with TF2? How is your FPS compared to Windows? Any other problems with mumble / steam etc. worth noting?
Just need to use a VM or an emulator of Windows like wine.
I tried it about a year ago, and it was a huge performance related fail.
Wine might have been improved since then, so I guess it’s worth a go, but I don’t advise getting your hopes up.
Yea I know, I’ll have a retail copy of Windows 7 on standby just in case.
I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to get Wine / Crossover working OK, just wondering how well TF2 will run with it.

Ye, same here. Gaming is just too much hassle on linux tbh if its the main thing you do. If you have the patience to dual boot then sure, go for it, ubuntu is great. But gaming is a fail on linux.

And yeah, though I wouldn’t say with the current packages of ubuntu (jaunty/karmic) that it’s really that much of a hassle to dual boot. Especially given that you can just shrink your partition down in win7.
I was thinking of installing debian a while back. Maybe I’ll do it this week and test tf2 out?
The major problem for me is that steam ingame doesn’t work.
One of my mate play under Linux, dunno the distribution but works fine.
really recommend investing in crossover games : ) worked gr8 when i was going through my macperiod

I don’t know who told you that you could use a VM, but a VM is highly unsuitable for running 3D intensive applications.
I’ve got steam + tf2 running through fedora 12 (gnome) – its not so bad to get steam running and the half life engines pretty ok [just hate the font : ( ] and tf2 is possible, however i found i didnt get so much fps in fedora as i do in vista. Its fine for the occassional game, however its not a replacement to running tf2 on windows.
If anyone is interested in Ubuntu this is pretty cool to have a look without messing with boot CDs etc http://wubi-installer.org/latest.php
Tried 9.04 – tf2 unplayable (mini-freeze every 10-15 sec). Tried every tuning tip i could find.

Well if you’re not into TF2 it can be grand.
QL and HoN both have native linux clients that run (almost) perfectly. Seeing as I don’t actually play that much tf2 anymore, ubuntu’s grand for gaming for me

Ye, and if you really want to streamline your comp for max performance linux is the shit, specially if you run more advanced distros such as gentoo (as me :P).
