pc not shutting down (fans keep working)
Created 3rd December 2009 @ 02:36
“Whenever I try to shutdown the computer (this is really shutdown, not sleep or hibernate), Windows7 performs the whole process of shutting down services, screen etc but the fans keep blowing. The pc becomes completely unresponsive (so keyboard, mouse, video stops working) but the fans keep running. The only way to get out of this is keeping the power button pressed for a few secs.”
never ever had such a problem on previous xp/vista/w7/ubuntu… now did a clean reinstall of my old, working, vista dvd and i have this rather annoying bug… any suggestions?

Is it a laptop or desktop? Which graphics card do you have? Which drivers?
I have faced a problem of the same kind and the problem was in graphics drivers
Might also be asus motherboard issue
cheers

A hammer usually does the trick for me.
Really. No, I’ve had this problem with my previous system, but I can’t recall what was the problem. Could’ve been the hammer ;) but I think it was the graphics driver.
Use XP.
xp fails if got any hardware from 21st century
will do some work around drivers, using windows update default ones (as they are the only ones that have nvidia cp, nvidia.com drivers doesnt have cp)

Hmmm… can you try this command in cmd for me:
shutdown -s -f -t 00
Hope it helps.

force shutdown doesnt do anything different… fans still working..
also, tried loading bios defaults, that didnt help too, so it must be os/software
get a fan controller and turn them off before you turn pc off
thats more hustle than just holding off button for 3 sec to do force off lol
W7 is shit end off go back to XP and stop crying

This.
In all seriousness though, sounds like drivers buggered up, especially if it didn’t happen on an older install of win7.
(For some reason I had to reinstall 7 twice before it would work properly, but after that it’s been fine :P)
Unplug the pc?
