Hey guys,

About a year and a half ago I got a new pc (i7 2600K 3.4Hz, GeForce GTX 570, 8GB RAM and a Hitachi HDS721010DLE630 1 TB hard drive) Everything’s been fine till today. I started switching my PC on and went to the bathroom. When I came back I found a black screen saying a whole bunch of system info and at the bottom of the screen ”S.M.A.R.T. status bad, backup and replace” I pressed F1 and started my windows without chaning anything in the Options. Everything was fine but Every half an hour or so an Error keeps poping up saying ”Windows has detected a hard disk problem. Back up your files immediately to prevent information loss and then contact the computer manufacturer to determine if you need to repair or replace the disk.” I ran the Windows recovery twitce but nothing changed. A program called ‘Speecy” says that my Hard Drives Status : Warning but the temperature is normal though. Is there any way of fixing the HDD without getting a new one? If no I’d like to stall as much time since I can still play and watch movies like I used to but I’m afraid that it can just die at any moment. Please help!

Hi.. it appears you have some nasty bad sectors on your HDD. This happens on normal-consumer HDDs like yours. They usually start occuring from the 1st year. It’s very unlucky that your HDD already have so many bad sectors, that SMART has marked it as bad.

Try and run this tool: http://www.hgst.com/hdd/support/downloads/WinDFT.zip this should give you a clear overview of how bad it’s looking.

Oh yes.. now that I think of it.. I’ve saved a few hard-drives back in the day with this tool: http://piotrkn22.republika.pl/drev/index.html – With some luck, you can still “save” it, and have a somewhat normally functioning drive.

Aren’t there any free programs? :/

It’s possible to use software to mark the bad blocks as unusable, but seriously if there’s an alarming amount of bad sectors already, you’re just delaying the inevitable. It’s only going to get worse.

So just do as windows says and take the backups and get a new hdd

I’m going to do that for sure, but I just want to make it temporarily work fine, atleast for a few more days. On Friday I’m going to give it back to the seller since it’s on varanty. I’d do that now but they said that it would take a long time to change it because there are huge queues so I just want to have something to do at home for the next few days since I can’t leave :3
