Lag when someone else uses wifi

Hi.
Whenever someone else is using the wifi while I try to play online games, I get super lags, ping keeps spiking from 30-600 and it is unplayable.
It is not about the internet’s bandwidth, because even if all the other wifi user is doing is accessing a website or downloading at 50KBps (Internet is 10MB down 800KB up), games are lagging.
If I download at 500KBps and play from the same computer, my general ping goes up by like 5-20, but it is ok-ish.

So, is there anything I can do fix this, or is it just the way wireless routers work?
(please, Skyride or some other know it all – give me some godly insight)

Thanks,
Trath

Welcome to the half-duplex common medium transmission system, lol.
You can set QoS on your router to prioritize your or TF2’s traffic, but that won’t mitigate the issue entirely. Sadly there’s not much you can do besides asking others to disable background applications that utilize bandwidth in any way, or connecting yourself to the Internet by cable.

Get a 5Ghz router, connect it to the network as an access point. Don’t give anyone else the password.

Log to router/modem.
Block all their ports.
??????
Profit

Works all the time when my faggot douche cunt roommates start downloading torrents. Since their IT skills are around a chimpanzee level they have no idea what’s going on and why their connection isn’t working.

Nobody has the password except fellow house people.

That is my router. It isn’t 5GHz but how do I connect it to the network as an “access point”?

Like freshmeatt said, wifi is a shared half-duplex medium. Meaning it goes to shit with more people on it. The whole idea is that get a wifi router just for you, preferbly 5Ghz because it’s generally faster (although smaller range) and it’s not as overcrowded as the normal 2.4Ghz wifi range.

Did you try using a cable for your connection to the router? It’s more stable in any way I can imagine.

Sadly nothing you can do besides playing in non-peak hours. I remember when I used to live with several flatmates and they were using skype, I was getting about 300-500 spikes with insane packet loss. Btw, same can happen when there are a lot of different wi-fi spots in the area, but less frequently.
