I tried this…

– reinstalling Steam by deleting everything except the SteamApps folder
– deleting the SteamApps folder and then redownloading the TF2 files
– reinstalling Windows XP
– installing Windows 7
– installing the latest drivers
– deactivating Steam Cloud
– all sorts of launch options (DX8, DX9, windowed, fullscreen, -autoconfig…)
– a hardware check (without errors)
– globally deactivating DEP

… and still get this when starting TF2, right after the loading screen:

hl2.exe has stopped working

Computer (it’s a notebook) specs:
Core 2 Duo T9550 @ 2.66GHz
9600M GT
4GB RAM
320GB HDD @ 5400rpm
Windows 7 x64

The timespan between the latest patch before this started and the day this started was more than 1 week, so the August 23 patch can’t be the cause. A software issue (OS, drivers, etc.) can definitely be excluded, a hardware issue can be too, theoretically. My bet is on a TF2 issue.

Don’t tell me to delete my “team fortress 2” folder because I’ve done this a thousand times already and it did not work.

Free HUD mods for whoever can solve my problem

delete system32

ghp.

Try launch tf2 with: -autoconfig -novid

If didn’t work, try again, but with: -novid -dxlevel 80

I’ve already saw the splash screen causing errors before (even if it is just at the end of it), so maybe -novid would help. And If I am not wrong, your IGP is capable of directx10 only, and TF2’s directx 9 is conflicting with dx10 VGAs/IGPs, but directx 8 is OK with it…

Your TF2 ist as vanilla as can be? Other Source games run well?

I deleted the team fortress 2 folder and disabled Steam Cloud, so yeah, as Vanilla as it can be.

I only tried Portal 2, which worked.

That may or may not be your problem.

Yeah it kinda sucks that I can’t just change my graphics card to see if that’d fix it :/

Hey, Broesel, sorry to hear about your computer troubles since I’m greatly anticipating the next release of your work! I may be able to help you work through this, though. Add me on Steam and we’ll see what we can work out. (BTW, I’m an American :P )

Are you sure your not having temperature problems?

FireWorks

Though its a laptop, I gotta ask: No overclocking on the modules or hardware mods?

Did you expand the RAM and might need to highten its voltage?
