Server settings [Solved]

Hello everyone

I’m the owner of a Hiperz gameserver with a performance kit included. Generally I’m very satisfied with the server and it’s runs really good for people all over europe (except for Norway for some reason). But that doesn’t change the fact that various lobby players complain about spike lags and other lags when they play on the server. Of course, I have taken into account that they are just idiots who probably forgot to close down their porn-download prior to gaming, and in 90 % of cases the error is on their network/computer. But I would like your opinion on my server config.

I’m just using the default config settings as it is now:

“sv_minrate 30000
sv_maxrate 100000
sv_minupdaterate 40
sv_maxupdaterate 66
sv_mincmdrate 40
sv_maxcmdrate 66
sv_allowdownload 1
sv_allowupload 1

Is there anything here I can change/add to improve performance in some way? The only mods I have installed on the server is SourceMod and MGEmod, so the server isn’t riddled with weird mods and soundpacks.

Your help/opinion is much appreciated :)

Regards,
evil

Most of those cvars will be overridden by the etf2l config so there is generally little point in modifying them.

You could try to run without sourcemod for a few days to see how that works out. Sourcemod alone doesn’t generally cause a giant performance hit, but on servers from a gameserver provider you never know, as they tend to oversell a bit (yay marketing).

It seems you are correct good sir. The rates are in the ETF2L CFGs, so it doesn’t matter anyways. Guess there’s nothing I can do to make the server run better then! But yes, sourcemod might take a small chunk of CPU power, but if it’s CPU related all of the servers players should feel the lags, and not just individual players.

but if it’s CPU related all of the servers players should feel the lags, and not just individual players.

That would depend on a number of things;
– how bothered a player is by lag (and how bad the lag needs to be for the player to be bothered by it)
– how bothered a player needs to be to actually feel the need to complain about it
– a player’s understanding of lag; they may be blaming their own pc because they don’t realise it’s on the server end, or vice versa, they’re blaming your server while the issue is at their end
etc..

Still, if the server is impaired by heavy CPU usage, all of the servers players will have ping spikes and it would be very much visible on the server since the ping would be visibly higher. The players that complained about lags on my server, had stable pings yet they complained about lags :(

But it seems the rates is not the problem, and the most likely cause is PEBCAK!

Thank you for your assistance anyways :)
