so tf2 randomly crashes and i get this message
“Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 301.42 stopped responding and has successfully recovered”
this only happens with tf2 on directx 9, any other programs or games work fine
try reinstalling the drivers with the clean install option enabled under advanced install options.
Lots of people recommended this on forums when I googled your problem
or try using an older driver or something

i tried that already and i’ve had it for with a lot of different drivers :/
I had the same troubles a few months back, only way to solve it was for me to downgrade driver.
If you go on nvidia’s forums your not alone, there’s a tonne of threads on this subject unanswered by nvidia.
Driver i went down to was 275.50, at which point the crashes stopped.
What’s the card? Is it Overclocked (set by yourself or the manufacturer).
I had this problem with my old 9600GT which was factory OC’d. I used Rivatuner to set it to the stock levels and never had a problem with it after that.
i get this a fair bit, take ur GPU out and blow the dust out.

it’s a 9800GT
From personal experience, if you’re using dx9, try changing it to dx8, it’ll stop the crashing. It is a known driver problem with the 8xxx-9xxx lineup

You’ll have a hard time then. I couldn’t get it working properly, it always crashed, no matter what config was used. Ended up getting an ati

Pretty much this – when I had an 8800GTS this was the only thing that would stop the crashing every hour.
Hello good sir
A 8800GTS should definitely not crash in TF2 with that error just because you are using DX9. The error you are getting is just a symptom of an underlying cause that might suggest one of the following: Your GPU is not getting enough power. Your GPU runs too hot or also there is a rare possibility that there is a driver conflict. Usually an IRQ conflict will be the most common but yet uncommon cause, since that rarely happens any more. There’s also the chance that there might be an error with the current driver, and a downgrade may be necessary.
The reason switching to DX8 works, is because DX8 is much less demanding than DX9
So, to go forward I will suggest the following:
1 – Install speedfan to assess the temperature of your GPU. It shouldn’t get over 95 degress while you are playing TF2. While you are at it, also check your CPU temps
2 – Install the latest drivers for the following devices: 1: GPU, 2: Audio, 3: Chipset, 4: Network card 5: If you are using a Software RAID, also update your RAID driver. If you are having issues locating drivers, or don’t know what you have, I can definitely recommend a program called Driver Genius. It saves you a lot of time :)
3 – Make sure you have all versions of DirectX, by downloading and running this: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35
4 – Update your BIOS

It was an old, dying card. That’s exactly why DX8 worked.
Install the latest version of directx, just get the web installer from the microsoft site. Fixed a similar issue on my family’s PC where the display drivers would crash.
