Cold water! If you use hot water, you’ll actually make the stain harder to remove.

Do it like a pro and digest the protein enzymatically. Just solve Proteinase K in the appropiate buffer (Tris-HCl should be fine), incubate the mouse pad in the solution at 37°C for an hour or so and your problem should be… solved. Just rinse it off afterwards. It’s quite cheap as well, only 30 € per 25 milligrams.
