I was going to build a new computer consisting of the i5 2500k and the HD6970 since my old setup is well…old. However someone recently told me theres going to be new gpus/cpus towards the end of the year. So I still havent bought anything since I was expecting price-drops or better updated models.
So my question is, can anybody confirm this? I realize my question is pretty vague, but I’m not really into hardware and any information would help me most likely. (my price range is roughly in the i5 2500k/HD 6970 range, could pay more but I dont really need more powerful stuff.)

tl;dr: Is it worth waiting til the end of the year for new stuff to come out or should i just go buy stuff now?

There’s always something new on the horizon. Just buy the i5 they will hold value due to AMD’s current top end CPU being poor.

You can wait until the end of the year until that new stuff comes out if you have to, but it’ll be exactly the same then – a few months later something new will be introduced!

There are news that AMD will start releasing their 22nm 7000series GPUs in December, yet if thats true, it can’t be the series high end GPUs, will be the 7800s and not the 7900, which should be on par with the card you are going to get (if not for some new features or better tessellation), price of the 6000series can go down, but not by a significant amount if your buying deadline is this year.
In contrary with Intel’s Ivy Bridge, which I believe will target a higher end market than Sandy Bridge, meaning higher price + higher performance, i5 2500k is more than enough and I don’t think Ivy will bring gaming performance into a new level. Also Intel will very patient dropping their CPUs price, seeing how AMD failed to compete, re-sellers might even start raising prices for a little.

So yeah, imo its not worth the wait at all if you have a buying deadline by the end of the year, if for February or so, can be worth grabbing a 7000series GPU, but thats more than 4 months away from now.
