I used 4 gigs before and found that occasionally I would use it all, however I think anything over 6gb is unnecessary at this point in time.

It really depends what you are going to do with the computer. If you have video editing programs, multiple browsers, tf2, startcraft and photoshop editing all at the same time, get 6gb, if only gaminng, 4gb.

TBH it would probably be better if you asked a pc building forum such as aria’s or overclocked gaming or whatever they are called. They will be able to give direct links to products and advice on compatability which is very necessary. (It would suck to realise your ram doesnt work with the mobo or something).

High idle ram usage is usually because people have viruses in the background, or dont monitor what programs are running at startup. These kinds of poeple are usually the type who dont know too much about computers or are idiots.

i5 2500K is pretty simple in terms of compatibility, you need to make sure the motherboard is socket 1155, and then find out whether the motherboard takes dual channel or triple channel ram. Then you see if the RAM you have chosen is dual/triple channel, and check whether it uses 1.5V and you are done.

As for your last paragraph, that is quite bitter, people who buy that much RAM tend to be PC enthusiasts, not what you have said. You should never go 6GB unless your motherboard is triple channel, in which case 3x2GB is a good idea. If you have double channel, get 2x2GB or 2x4GB as dual channel mode tends to run faster.

Why the ASUS motherboard not a jab, pure interest as im looking into i5-2500k setups and was swaying more towards the MSI P67A-GD53.

AUTOBOTS

Just ordered this:
Scythe Mine 2
Asrock P67 PRO3
Intel Core i5 2500K Boxed
Crucial 128GB m4
G.Skill 8GB DDR3 PC3-12800 DC Kit
Arctic Cooling MX-2 (4g)

:)

Why a Z68 Quad? Any advantages from a Z68 apart from being able to OC while using the onboard gpu? Not that I’m going to get the Z68 version of my board, since it’s got worse vrm.
