I am currently with Virgin Media (30 MB package) and I am thinking of changing, as Virgin Media internet is a piece of shit and their customer support is even worse.

So does anyone have a particular provider to recommend, in North London if that helps.

Heard they’re pretty good, it’s better to go with a smaller company than the mainstream companies.

They’re all pretty shit. Virgin is the least shit currently. I’d stick with them.

Every single thing in consumer-orientated computing is overloaded. EVERYTHING. It doesn’t make financial sense not to.

For example, if you buy web hosting that costs £4/month, it’s probably on a dedi server that costs like £80/month, and has over a thousand customers websites on it at £4/month.

Could it handle the load if every single person’s website was accessed at the same time? Nope, not a chance.

The chances of that actually EVER occuring? Pretty damn near zero.

The idea is to get the right balance on the overloading. When it’s perfect everybody wins (company makes more profit, consumers get it cheaper). The problem occurs when scummy companies try to cut it too fine in pursuit of profit, and end up going overstepping the market, cutting down on the quality/speed/bandwidth/etc.

I’m with BeThere in SW London (as linked above) and very very happy. I’d check the location of your telephone exchange – as if it’s a long way away then the jarring loss of download speed might be a pain.

With the connection set to fastpath I get a stable 5-6ms to bbc.co.uk and seemingly good routing to most of europe. I pasted a tracert in the other thread to jolt.co.uk, but can add some more tonight to other places if you want!

Hmm the only thing about be BeThere is that they would have to install a new line at my house, which would be £85.00…

rubbish mate. there’s much better, smaller companies out there who provide a far better service than virgin media.

I think that would apply for most alternative providers as they’ll all be based on ADSL2 or VDSL2 and thus having a phoneline.

You don’t necessarily need to go with Be for phone though – BT or someone might offer free line install if you sign up to a ridiculously long contract and you’d have phone/broadband billed separately.

I’m on be, never looked back.
