Just got a Gigabyte GeForce 9600gt 512mb ddr3, swapped it with my Asus GT520 1gb ddr3 cus its obviously better for games, and i got it for free. Anyway, the temp on my gt520 used to be around 70C while idling (passive cooler), just plugged in the totally new, out of the bag 9600gt (which also has a passive HUGE ASS DOUBLE sided cooler with these pipe things) and while idling its @ 92C, jesus mother fucking christ why is it so high? Havent even tried to launch tf2, keeping my case open if it catches on fire. http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/5171/tempsa.jpg
might it be because its like 30c outside? My cpu is keeping at a low temp. Strange.

whats your airflow like in the case? what case is it?
Just get yourself a fan stick it on your passive heat sink.
92c on idle? :D send it back then
Its 45C in room where I’m and I get around 85C at max load and I don’t have any external case fan. I guess you should try it in your friend’s PC, if its fine its probably some failure in power flow (?), if not then its just a bad chip, RMA.
-Remove heat-sink.
-Clean off thermal paste.
-Re-apply thermal paste.
-Attach heat-sink again.
Could just be bad contact between heat-sink and the board

this. the 9600 needs at leas t a little bit of airflow. so get a case fan (or two, one in the front to blow in one in the back to blow out, obviosly depends on your case) or just fix a fan on the gpu directly.
in a more worse case maybe the cooler is not attached correctly to the card. do you have warranty on it?
Yeah im gonna use my GT520 and bring this one back to the shop.
The stupid thing is, my 9500gt broke, so i bought the cheap gt520 and sent the broken one to the shop cus i had warranty on it, and they gave me this 9600gt in the broken down ones place. They gave me a broken card, because my card broke. LOL

you still didnt answer our questions^^ i dont think its broke! the temps would go even higher ingame and it would shut down.
btw are you sure it goes to 2d mode when idling?

Its a no-brand shit case, thats all i can say. I like to tweak around my pc so i usually leave the case open. I have a cpu fan, the fan on the power supply and one in the back side of the case.
how much space is below the card? maybe a soundcard or smth directly under it? a picture would help. as said the 9600 “passive” cant really run without airflow around it.
the heat has to go somewhere, its not like the cooler is “eating” it.
to fix a slow running (like 500-800 rpm)120 cm fan case on it would be the best solution i guess, and much better then a standard 9600.
Theres two passive coolers, ones really close (~1cm) from my net card. and the pci-e slot is really near the bottom of my case. If i keep my case open, cant i just fix my back-end fan to the card?
sure. just make something blow on it somehow. placing the fan next to it would help also. you just need to get the heat ot there.
did a quick research and this seems to be a quiet common prob for this card which is just cause it has a tdp of 95 W which is not easy to cool passive or more specific not really possible. wasnt the best idea to make a passive version of it imho.
