opened this thread and thought why the fuck is chris asking the community about computer hardware……*smacks head in shame*

All motherboards feature at least 1 PCIe x16 slot operating at x16 speed, so there is nothing really like a GPU not compatible with a mobo, what you should be looking for is how much of a bottleneck you’ll suffer by your CPU, so that you get a GPU that fits your CPU performance.

i’m pretty sure my cpu is good enough. i7-920 @ 2.67 ghz

I guess a 570 or 6970 (or unlocked 6950) will be the best choice, 580 is the best single card at the market and I guess as long as the resolution is not more than 1680×1050 (and 1920×1080 at some cases) it’ll suffer a CPU bottleneck, your CPU is not a Sandy Bridge after all.

EDIT: If you raise your CPU OC a bit (3.3-3.4GHz) there will prolly be zero bottleneck for a 580 at 1920×1080, also the bottleneck will be for the CPU intensive games, and most of these games get too much fps already so you wont really notice.

If you’re a rich fucker, sure, go for those GPUs

What has been said about modern GPUs and Motherboards is true, it’ll work, your issue may be whether or not your power supply can deal with it, though guessing at your build from your processor, you probably have 500W or above, so shouldnt be a problem afaik, _you_ need to check though.

tl;dr do a very minor amount of research into GPUs if you want to get the best performance, if you want to go for brand loyalty, do it, performance differences aren’t huge at the moment, and if you want some of my personal advice, don’t bother with the top end cards, something like a 460 or 6850 will last you for just as long as the higher spec’d ones in the real world, usually.

As for this dude going on about bottleneck, no clue, sounds like epic BS to me but I’ll let it pass as I know nothing in that respect, wait for someone else to clarify.
Though overclocking more is always nice ;)
