It happens randomly but I will start to get some real choppiness in TF2, and once it goes choppy it stays that way until I restart the game.

– HP Elitebook 8540w
– i7 M620 @ 2.67GHz (4 CPUs)
– 8GB of RAM
– Win 7 64 bit
– NVIDIA Quadro FX 880m

Launch options
-sw -w 1920 -h 1200 -console -noborder -nojoy -noipx -novid -useforcedmparms -noforcemaccel -noforcemspd

Autoexec.cfg launches myconfig.cfg which contains
Rate 30000
cl_updaterate 66
cl_cmdrate 66
cl_interp_ratio 1
cl_interp 0.015
fov_desire 90

I went into advanced options in the video tab and tried turning off pretty much everything in there and dropping down the settings to medium or low but I still get the chop.

I know this is not the best machine on the planet but I got a more smooth experience on my previous Elitebook that was an i5 so I assume with some tweaking I can get this running better.

Any help is appreciated.

Probably overheating.

Really? I was able to play fine on my last Elitebook with lesser specs just fine.

I guess I do notice the fan noise a bit more on this one. Anything you can think of to try and fix this?

Your previous was an i5, this is an i7. Could be that i7’s get warmer, not really sure. inb4 Chris

Anyway, something like this may do the trick: http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=laptop%20cooler&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=921&bih=518

Buy something with fans on, Will be a lot more effective than one without.

Usually when a component overheats (cpu/gpu) the system throttles the component causing slowdowns, however, these slowdowns persist untill the component is cool enough that the system can stop throttling it. If it is overheating, it seems like the system is unable to bring the temperature back down thus preventing the components from running at their full speed.

To check if your computer is overheating, use a tool like hwMonitor (http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html) and record temps during load (or simply check peak temps after a gaming session). Anything over 100C is bad, and over 90C is usually a cause for concern (but not necesarily a problem). Ideally you would like to see temps in the 80’s or lower, but the chips are usually designed with a thermal limit of around 115C, although throttling may occour before that.

edit: quattro graphics aren’t designed for gaming, and you may find performance to be lower than the comparable gaming card. Also drivers aren’t necesarily updated to fix compatability issues with games, although I would think it should be possible to use standard drivers with a quattro card(?)

Well, when my 8800GTX went to 100c it artifacted like a bitch (cable stuck in the fan, don’t ask :D).

Yeah the laptop wasn’t bought with gaming in mind, it is work first which is why I have the Quadro card.

Oddly enough Bad Company 2, Starcraft 2 all seem to be running fine on it. I would have assumed since TF2 is older it would have run fine on this card.

I ordered a cooling pad with fan and will see if that helps at all.

Maybe I need a different cfg?

Got home and tried Chris’ cfg for high frames and seems better.
