Huge Connection Problems

All right, my internet has always been pretty slow, but a connection problem yesterday has totally wrecked everything. The problem was apparently unrelated, something to do with my ISP accidentally changing my user-name and password(lol). It’s fixed. But now, I have some gigantic connectivity issues. Yesterday, I couldn’t connect to certain IPs. (Websites, Mumble channels, TF2 servers) Now, I can connect to those IPs but am now unable to do so for the previously working sites, including bt.com, vanillatf2, steampowered.com and many more.

When I try to ping the timed out websites or IPs in cmd, it just gives me four failed requests. I have cleared everything from my cache, deleted all cookies, cleaned my registry, defragged, flushed DNS,temporarily disabled Firewall and nod32 with no such luck. I can’t check my emails, visit Steam support or even sign into Steam itself. It is not computer centric as I can’t log onto these sites on the other three computers in the house. Not only do I time out when trying to visit the websites, but my connection speed has been halved.

Before I talk to my ISP, is there anything anyone can suggest?

Thanks in advance, any help really is appreciated.

sure your area isn’t being upgraded to infinity? march 31st seemed to be a common rollout date for that on their site. maybe just some downtime

If it started when your isp did some thing it’s almost certainly a problem at their end. I would contact them asap with loads of hard evidence like the sites you can’t reach etc. Try pinging the ip of the websites (I use the flag fox plugin – etf2l is 85.236.96.20, more info http://tracert.com/)

Do a speed test every 30 mins for about 3-4 hours (or what ever you think) and save the screen shots using a site like http://www.speedtest.net/.

In all my dealings with isp’s/tech support, the more info you have the quicker the issue will be resolved and you can skip all the “have you tried turning it off and then on again” etc.

Are you only getting this on websites, or are IPs affected as well ?
If its just websites give google DNS a shot, worked for me a while back

OK quick update. BT don’t know what’s going on, current ISP don’t have a clue. My router is perfectly synced and configured and I have a 2.5 megabit speed going… but here’s the catch. I cannot access certain IPs (yes, not domain names, IPs, so that pushes the idea of a broken DNS out of the way), I have synced 3 different routers with no configuring issue, reset factory defaults more times than I can remember (ruling out a virus theory), tested on 5 different PCs, 3 different ethernet cables but to no avail. 90% of the time it won’t connect at all and Windows diagnostics doesn’t even seem to give a fuck. My ISP is trying to find out what’s going wrong, as it seems like everything on my end is perfect. The strangest part is that my ISP and BT have never heard or seen anything like this before. (and it’s highly unlikely that there’d be an exchange problem that would only affect me…)

I’m down to one last theory, and it’s pretty grim. The internal wiring of the house is dreadful. Done by baboons. Lights have stopped working in some parts of the house. Originally when we moved in we had to disable all phone sockets except the main one to even get a signal. Could this be the cause of the mysterious connection problem?
According to our ISP when our connection is temporarily off (with everything perfectly synced etc; seemingly no reason for it to go off…) 0 bytes of data are transferred from here to there and vice versa, and even for your router to be totally on it has to use about 2 bytes.

A final point of interest that I don’t generally know enough about to really comment on, but fuck it I’m tired. I live in a 200 year old granite house in Cornwall (a county known for what I’m about to explain), so there is of course Radon within the walls. Can radiation affect home electrics e.g. internal wiring? I doubt it, but I’m just putting it out there, hopefully someone knows more of the subject than I do.

If you actually bothered to read any of that, cheers. And if you’re going to attempt to help an unfortunate soul in his time of need; thank you very much, any help is genuinely appreciated.

I’m a total noob so this might not actually mean anything. But my house is built on the side of a rock hill(the whole thing is built upon though) and two years ago I stopped being able to connect to my favorite servers in css. Some of them worked some didn’t, and the next day it would change. after two -three weeks from that there was apparantly Radon flowing in or something. After we got that fixed it started working perfectly again after a couple of days. It could just be a huge coincidence but, trying to help so wth.
Hope you manage to find the problem.

Dude, you may have just saved me a lot of time and hassle. I’m having the EXACT same problem. Alternating IPs EVERYDAY. Thank you so much, man. <3

Also that's actually pretty scary, we've lived in this house for 6 years…
