I’m pretty sure it’s the dos attack mentioned in the other two threads already. When you send a lot of packages to a server it will lag. When you send a bit more it will crash immediatly.
As I said in the other thread I can see in my firewall logs that nearly every server is attacked when some players are on it.
All you can currently do is ask your gsp to implement the fw rules mentioned here:

and yes, it has happened to servers in warmup, happened to fruit server when not even 10 ppl were on… twice….

the query cache I mentioned earlier in the thread doesn’t work :( how ever hiding the server with the settings mentioned by others earlier in the thread has worked so far for us :)
In pickups I played in at the beginning of the month this happened alot (at least 15 games, different servers), especially on Badlands. Typically after the game started, when there was 8 mins 50seconds left on the round timer, it would do this -:
Time out till there was 1 second left on the timer, then it’d resume for a second, then the time out would begin again. It would then either, get to 18seconds (everytime) and the game would carry on as usual, or the game would time out and everyone would get dc’d.
My multiplay server just had crashed whilst I was alone on it. Happened after 4:54 after I’ve joined it.
Oh and I tried it again – server crashed once again.

Attacks on matches are still happening.
Yesterday evening there were 2 30-second long attacks during our pcws. The Gamerzone – px match also received a 30-second long attack at 22:54 CET.
There’ve been some changes to the firewall script and these changes were effective at blocking the attacks yesterday.
It sure seems these attacks are automated and only last 30 seconds, the default timeout period for players IIRC.

I’m guessing it’s 35 seconds long, which sounds reasonable, as posted by others in this thread.

rcon hide_server 1 seems to have fixed the problem for us.
This solution has worked for all 4 of our servers. We don’t get the lag/crash anymore at all.
I don’t get this whole dos attack thing, why would people attack pcws and stuff? I can kind of understand people attacking tf2tv streams and such, as pathetic as it is, but why bother with other games? Is it one person just being a waste of space or a lot of them?
