The first time I launch TF2 and try to connect to a server my internet seems to die for about 2-3 mins. Well at least I can’t load a webpage or it takes ages, the tf2 server browser doesn’t work and I can’t connect to a server by ip. But I don’t lose connection to irc or mumble (but I can’t connect to them if I haven’t already. This is only on my computer other people using the network are unaffected.

You have to stop the server browser from loading all the public servers (the left tab).
Lies this does nothing :).
same problem here !
Try setting the download speed of your connection at some thing lower in the main steam window.
when im connecting to a server my internet slows the fuck down and ive surmised that its just because im establishing a connection with the server, everything is fine once i’m on the server
im having the same problem, if you guys fix it let me know

buy a new router
This, though it is not necessarily win7-related. I had the same using XP; resolved by replacing my router.
it’s a steam problem, the problem has been reported many times with lots of different makes of router, the version of windows you are running has F all to do with it.
Valve will fix it at some point i’m sure
It’s a steam problem, I’ve didn’t have this when I had my old router and my old XP, and it didnt come with Windows 7 either. I had my Windows 7 for 6 weeks, and then a steam update came, and this happened :P

not necessarily true, windows 7 tends to cause issues with certain routers.

Same problem here.
The only thing you can do right now is using the “server browser” from Steam (Steam -> See -> Servers)
I got a new router.. it has fixed the problem
