Router restarts itself

I’ve had my router for like forever, however for the past few weeks I’ve experienced some difficulties. It likes to restart itself, but only at certain times. Mostly it’s during the afternoon till the evening. As you can imagine, it’s pretty annoying if you lose your internet for 3 minutes, sometimes even 5 to 6 times per half an hour (!). Weirdly, not every day (on some days, it works fine), and it works fine at late night. (dunno about mornings tho. I sleep. Alot.). What I don’t understand is that it worked perfectly for years. I even bought a switch (not because of the timeouts though), but the problem still consists. Any suggestions what I should do? I’m a noob when it comes to configuring router stuff..
Oh yeah I should mention that it’s a Motorola SBG900E.
Thanks in advance.
you’re sure it’s not losing sync instead of restarting?
have you checked that your DSL cable and microfilter are okay (by testing with alternative ones)?
have you tried using the master socket?
have you checked if your SNR is abnormal when this happens?
have you checked if your router is showtime (and not full init)?

Buy a new one?
hello there, shit suggestion man! let’s not fix anything, just replace it.

afaik, Motorola routers = crap.
Was just giving the man a tip for a future investment. Don’t shoot me now D:
shit suggestion man… I lol’d
To add, it is entirely possible for routers to overheat, it’s rare but shitty models will suffer from this,

I really appreciate that you always immediately respond to my desperate help posts and respect your enormous knowledge in computer stuff, I really do, but you need to understand that for me, everything sounds like chinese (except the cable part; I’ll check that one out tomorrow).
I’m pretty sure it restarts, as all the little green lights of power, receive, send, online, pc activity and wireless go out and go back on after a few seconds.

Are you sure it’s not auto-updating? Not sure if your router does that, but my shit BT Home Hub resets itself every time it updates. This can happen randomly at any time during the day and there’s nothing you can do to stop it.
It’s also so shit that it resets every time I refresh the server browser or join a public server.

@ Chris. It’s cable, not DSL.
There are a few things to check.
Make sure you’re not running torrents with many connections. A lot of routers choke on this and restart. This modem is known to reboot when someone uses the wireless + torrents.
Disable the wireless if you don’t use it, it’s basically broken on this device. It’s known to crash the router when an iPhone or HTC Desire connects to it :/
Try to find the admin interface and verify the signal strength. If you don’t know how to do this, call the ISPs helpdesk and let them check for you.
Maybe one of the coax cables in your house is of poor quality and has developed a fault over the years. If the connection is poor, the ISPs helpdesk should be able to detect that remotely
Many consumer grade devices use poor capacitors. These start to die after a couple of years of continued use, causing power instability inside the device. This will lead to crashes/restarts. You can’t really check this without opening the device. If the other 2 things don’t fix it, it could well be dying capacitors.

cos you say it’s working fine late at night, that leads me to believe it’s a microfilter problem. One might have been knocked and damaged or something, or just plain needs replacing.
it could be any number of problems i suppose and is probably most likely what Arie said, but since it never happens late at night, the microfilter is a strong possibility. If you don’t use a microfilter… the thing that plugs into your phone socket and has a net socket and phone socket splitter thing… if you don’t have a working one of that, using the phone will disconnect you from the internet and reset your connection, be it incoming calls, or people making calls from your house.
Obviously late at night, you don’t get many, if any, phone calls received or being made, and thats why i think it might be that. Best way to test this…. wait until late at night when the connection is usually stable, then make a phone call using your house phone to your mobile phone, and then mobile to your house phone. If it’s the microfilter / netsplitter, then it’ll disconnect you both times and you’ll see the net reconnecting on the router.
if thats the issue, replace your microfilters, if not, try the other stuff ppl suggested. hmm, well u have to wait until late at night to do my plan, so try other stuff now and that later :D

Chris, what is this?? I’ve been in IT for over 5 years and I have no idea what you just said lol

If it’s a few years old, it’s prob fooked, certain routers (no idea about yours) suffer from over heating, if it has vents on the bottom make sure there is a gap for ventilation (don’t sit it on carpet), or just try just turning it upside down.
Borrow a router from someone else, see if that fixes your problem, if your isp sent you the original router, see if they will send you a new one
