I’ve had my router for like forever, however for the past few weeks I’ve experienced some difficulties. It likes to restart itself, but only at certain times. Mostly it’s during the afternoon till the evening. As you can imagine, it’s pretty annoying if you lose your internet for 3 minutes, sometimes even 5 to 6 times per half an hour (!). Weirdly, not every day (on some days, it works fine), and it works fine at late night. (dunno about mornings tho. I sleep. Alot.). What I don’t understand is that it worked perfectly for years. I even bought a switch (not because of the timeouts though), but the problem still consists. Any suggestions what I should do? I’m a noob when it comes to configuring router stuff..

Oh yeah I should mention that it’s a Motorola SBG900E.

you’re sure it’s not losing sync instead of restarting?

have you checked that your DSL cable and microfilter are okay (by testing with alternative ones)?

have you tried using the master socket?

have you checked if your SNR is abnormal when this happens?

have you checked if your router is showtime (and not full init)?

To add, it is entirely possible for routers to overheat, it’s rare but shitty models will suffer from this,

Are you sure it’s not auto-updating? Not sure if your router does that, but my shit BT Home Hub resets itself every time it updates. This can happen randomly at any time during the day and there’s nothing you can do to stop it.

It’s also so shit that it resets every time I refresh the server browser or join a public server.

cos you say it’s working fine late at night, that leads me to believe it’s a microfilter problem. One might have been knocked and damaged or something, or just plain needs replacing.

it could be any number of problems i suppose and is probably most likely what Arie said, but since it never happens late at night, the microfilter is a strong possibility. If you don’t use a microfilter… the thing that plugs into your phone socket and has a net socket and phone socket splitter thing… if you don’t have a working one of that, using the phone will disconnect you from the internet and reset your connection, be it incoming calls, or people making calls from your house.

Obviously late at night, you don’t get many, if any, phone calls received or being made, and thats why i think it might be that. Best way to test this…. wait until late at night when the connection is usually stable, then make a phone call using your house phone to your mobile phone, and then mobile to your house phone. If it’s the microfilter / netsplitter, then it’ll disconnect you both times and you’ll see the net reconnecting on the router.

if thats the issue, replace your microfilters, if not, try the other stuff ppl suggested. hmm, well u have to wait until late at night to do my plan, so try other stuff now and that later :D
