Hey all,
I’m thinking of upgrading my PC since my FPS on TF2 is pretty horrible. I’m running almost everything on low and I’m still getting like only 150 FPS, it sometimes drops to 60.
My specs:
Geforce 8800GTS 320mb
Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz
2 GB of Ram
My question is: What is the most critical to upgrade?
Thanks!
Instead of buynig new pc, have you thought about getting an fps config or even setting your FPS_max to 80?
Take a look at this: http://etf2l.org/forum/league/topic-10435/page-4/?recent=184816#post-184816
Have a go with this before you confine yourself to having to upgrade:

upgrade your cpu to a very good dual core or quad core and maybe ram

In terms of gaming at the moment a quad core has no real edge over dual core, so don’t bother.
There is no need for him to increase his RAM for TF2, 2GB is fine.
To be honest the system listed should be okay as long as he isn’t running at a particularly high resolution. Try the config I (and lolage) linked to and see if it does the job.

The real question here is: How much do you want to spend?
a minor upgrade to have real impact will cost u around 350€ (changing cpu and gfx)

His current cpu will bottleneck a better gfx generation, quad cores doesnt affect directly the games, but since they change your gfx performance quad core is still a better option than a dual core. Even tho for that socket E8xxx are still great options

Only advantage of a quad core is having 30 tabs of ff open, playing tf2 and listening to music without any problems.
If you really want to upgrade just for tf2 then your cpu and maybe ram (depending on the speed) could do with a bump. Don’t get me wrong by far the weakest part of you system is probably the gfx card but TF2 doesn’t seem to give a shit about that.
up the ram to 4GB, OC the cpu with 25%.
Check new framerate, then consider upgrade.
As for the gfx, more info pl0x (e.g. shared memory?)
Some things for you to read
how many cores do you need?

read through that and draw your own conclusions, on the best way of spending your money
however most if not all of these reviews are copied and pasted from their usa site, so i doubt the pricing info is correct as far as € or £ are concerned

Like I mentioned in my post, I’m already running TF2 on low/medium. The whole point here is that I want some better graphics at the same res without losing any FPS (I just can’t stand low fps CFG’s, gives me a headache). I used to run TF2 pretty good on high, but since there has been alot of recent updates my FPS dropped.
So I guess I’ll just try overclocking my CPU first? Is it neccesary to have some better cooling installed (right now I have 2 fans installed)?
Thanks for all the comments :)

It depends on how far you overclock/overvolt it, just keep checking the temps and have an event threshold set up in speedfan to beep the PC speaker if it gets too hot.

which motherboard do u have? do u use intel’s cooler or some aftermarket one?
how can u say that there is no advantage to quad…wow…. i upgraded my c2d to c2q a month ago and im the happiest gamer ever :D
btw on topic –
a) 2 more gigs of ram
b) get a used quad + good cooler + OC it to about 3.5ghz or more and you will have stable over 100fps on high
cheap and iizii

There is no reason to spend much more money on a quad than a dual at this point in time, as most games barely use two cores, never mind four.
Yes, the CPU does affect the GPU’s ability, but if you have a good dual core (like a Phenom II) you will see little to no difference, and you will have a good £70 in your pocket.
