As titles says looking for new graphics card for christmas, im not upgrading anything else apart from maybe my ram.
pc specs are:
AMD 64×2 5200+ 2.7ghz dualcore
2gb ram (idk speed think 667mhz)
asus m2n-mx se plus**
Budget is roughly £150~
**it says it supports AM2+ processors which if im correct means quad core phenoms, can anyone more knowledgeable fill me in on this?

There’s little point in getting such powerful gpu when cpu is not up for it. I think GF9800 should be enough, dont know about the prices though, so if theres little difference you should get GTX :)

I don’t think you’re right. The 9800 series are a failed series of cards, why on earth would anyone on earth advise someone to buy one of those? =[

Failed? How come?
Their performance increase over the previous series was pretty much nothing. And some series last a good amount of time before the next is released, but it was no time at all before they released the 2xx series after the 9xxx series. And the 2xxx series trounce the 9 series in performance.
Why would anyone spend hard earned cash on an outdated series of cards =[
I’m not saying I’m 100% right but this is my understanding, and I wouldn’t advise 9 series. He could spend half and get a 4850 they go for like 80 quid

9800 was a bad series. Nothing wrong with the cards, just bad price/performance ratio.
However, What size of monitor do you have. No point getting a 4870 if the guy only has a 15″ CRT. :P
Nvm, other people posted in the while i was typing

19″ lcd skyride, I would prefer ATI to nvidia as the last few cards i’ve had has been a massive let down.

4870 are great cards! If you want an ATI that’s the way to go man
yup, +1 a 4870 then. ;)
Also, may want to consider a new CPU. Your current CPU will definately be bottlenecking a 4870.
Honestly, don’t bash ATI, the whole Nvidia vs ATI arguements are silly, take it on a card vs card basis. ;)
if your motherboard is AM2+ then it will support the Phenom II series of cpu’s
