Hey…
My connections really fucking wank. However when my 7 other flatmates aren’t on, it’s less wank, but still pretty wank. I’m getting spikes (randomly) to about anywhere between 70-200ms. I am on BT with a 20mbps line which gets on average 2-5mbps during the peak times and about 10-12 during non-peak times.
The router/modem is a BT Homehub 2.0, and as there is no cat5 cabling around the house, I am using POWERLINE adaptors, after I found out that wireless was shit.
I’ve heard powerline can be hit and miss depending on the noise… but I’m just wondering how true this is because of all the alogirithms used, and also are there any other alternatives I could try other then wireless and powerline?
I’m kind of getting to the stage where Im going to run a fat ass 50m ethernet cable to my router from my room…
cheers for help gais!

Definitely be my recommendation, I’ve no experience with powerline but im stuck with wireless which obviously is just plain awful, and with multiple devices sharing the wifi you’re going to be fked.
As a side note, as stupid as it sounds, check that your BThub isnt near something like a microwave (or perhaps any nextdoor neighbours have something that could be pushing out similar frequencies) as that will definitely cause your ping to jump from 50 – 300ms easy
It’s a pain, but ethernet cables will more than likely solve your problems, unless it is BT but chances are, probably not (unless someone is robbing your internets)
I use powerline and it seems alright atm. Im on the 3rd floor with the router on the bottom floor so wireless was awful. With 2-3 other housemates using the net i generally have 20-70 pings on most servers but it can be infuriatingly tempremental at times.
Well it’s in the kitchen above the washing machines :D and next to the two fridges. But the microwave is on the opposite side of the room.
I’m guessing it’s just noise why I get spikes as 8 people in a house would have alot of electricals ect…
You reckon ethernet is the only possible solution :<?
(p.s. the spikes are actually to the router/modem itself aswell)
Can you not just request permission from your landlord to drill some holes through relevant ceiling/wall and get a substantially shorter and more convenient cable trail? It’s what I did way back and was a lot better than having a cable running throughout the entire house.
Yea well he was really grouchy at letting a sky man drill a hole… let alone me…
I wouldn’t even know where to drill and do what either o.O
I have a cable running through the study window out onto the back garden thing and through the back garden doors.
I feel so cool 8)
windows7?
windows7?
Is that just a slagging windows 7 or do you know how to fix the fact that i get 120 ping on middle and like 40 loss / choke :D
First mix in ages as demo was rather funny ^^
Can you not put the router near your room georgie? Or is there only 1 phone port. Otherwise just run an ethernet cable under the carpet tbh :>
Its only a student house, take that shit up!

no i know how to fix it now, but if he doesnt have w7 then its no point
AnimaL, how do you fix it? Cause I wanna use w7 but I lag that way, unless I limit my fps to like 15.

1. start>regedit> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/Audiosrv
2. remove mmcs from "DependOnService"
3. restart
4. start>services.msc
5. find multimedia class scheduler
6. disable it (in properties)
7. done
now… this fucked up sound a bit for me, its still there, but seems different. Fiddle around with EQ to make it sounds better.

On XP actually animal…
But yea… guess the uber large ethernet it is…
But that’s so much hassle… there must be an easier way surely?
(And no tapley… there is only one port in the back of the kitchen T.T)
I’ve found out the ammount my connection spikes is really sporadic.
Sometimes it will spike like 3-8 times a minute and others like 1-2 times every 5-10 minutes. I think it gets slightly better with the less people on as it is generally alot better at night. But why would I still get spiking to my router?
Craaazzyyyy… BT recently fixed my CRC errors on my line but boy… my connections upload has gone from 1-1.5mb to like 0.3mb…. hey up upload saturation!
