Is it still worth buying an E8400 or any Core2Duo (around October because its my birthday)? I’ve heard i7s are being discontinued for something else? You tell me :D budget not much about £150 max because I need to buy a mobo too…
what have u got atm, tf2 only uses 2 cores so a quad core isnt rly worth it for tf2, however id still buy http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-215-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=567
E8400 = Awesome for TF2, and will stay awesome for some time too.
If you save up a little you can get hold of the new i5 cpu’s coming out soon, sort of a budget version of i7 but with almost the same performance (you’re going to need new motherboard and ram for it though)
ATM I have an AM2 4200+ which is absolute shit and the mobo means I can only upgrade to about a 6000+ which I don’t really want to do, because it will be redundant in a year.
^is that the triple RAM stuff
Is that really much better than the E8400? It’s quite a leap in price for .2ghz
Any recommendations for a motherboard as well? Around £50-70? Don’t want anything fancy but should keep cool and have the ability for some basic overclock in 2011…
I wouldn’t even consider building a new S775 based system, it’s about as dead as Ted Kennedy.
Either go for i5 (when they release it) or Phenom II, depending on price/performance.
You don’t actually need a quadcore, but you might as well go for one when you see the prices.
IIRC a Phenom II 940 costs about as much as an E8400, but it outperforms the Q9550.
Whatever you decide, make sure you compare the prices of the complete rig and not just the CPU, AMD motherboards tend to be a lot cheaper than their Intel counterparts.
