I’d be surprised if custom plugins could’t somehow be added with multiplay. I’ve got sourcemod running on a multiplay server.

I’ve had a MP server for quite a while now and all I can add to F2’s analysis is:

1. Get mumble not ventrilo (try asking FB!)
2. 2 slot stv isn’t the best, but, for non-div1/2 teams, it’s only an inconvenience during league time.
3. Clanforge is a pleasure to work with
4. The FTP thing is a bit stupid, but I’ve found MP’s customer support exemplary. Like, I’ve dealt with them 6 or 7 times on IRC, and each time was talked to after ~10 mins by helpful, competent staff who work incredibly unsocial hours. Their FTP replacement /does/ work. It’s just a bit slow. But it’s not like you can’t upload files.

Multiplay UK is pretty bad for everyone from eastern Europe. Their nl servers are ok but have low server fps.

As far as I know server fps is the same as the UK ones.
Try 85.236.109.24:27015 (NL) and 85.236.100.246:27215 (UK) with net_graph 4
Both have 256 fps

Yes, they are both 256fps while for example Clanhost and i3D provide 500fps servers. You can clearly feel the difference on them. What I meant is that Multiplay’s NL servers are otherwise fine but for example Finnish and Russian teams will not want to play on their UK servers.

Okay, I can’t feel the difference. (Or, I have never played on a server that I felt was considerably better than what I usually play on.) I wonder if the guy that started this topic can feel the difference… and if it is worth to pay 3 times the amount of money for.

And actually I withdraw my statement about Multiplay being more expensive than others… After a quick run-through, it turns out to be quite the opposite.

Notice that not all sites provided a precise amount before I had to enter my name, or they didn’t support ordering a server for 3 months. Those costs are marked with “(estimated)”.

Also notice that all of these offers aren’t exactly the same. For example, Multiplay provide a free voice server. There might also be other differences, I just tried finding the cheapest 12 slot server I could.

(Prices might be wrong, feel free to correct me.)

1 Month, 12 slots:

Gameservers: €9.48 (estimated)
Multiplay: €14.28
ClanHost: €15.95
Gameserver 500FPS: €29.16 (estimated)
i3D: €30.25

3 Months, 12 slots:

Gameservers: €27.02 (estimated)
Multiplay: €38.56
ClanHost: €47,85 (estimated)
i3D: €66.20
Gameservers 500FPS: €83.09 (estimated)

Anyway as I said before, you should not buy a Multiplay server if you’d like make scripts for SourceMod. So Gameservers seem to be the best choice. However, when you go to their website and pick a European location it says that they have no free server spots at the moment.

We have a london based server with e-frag, £5 a month for 12 man server, by adding cvars to your server config you can get a comfortable 10 slot stv for free, and ofcourse we are leeching off FB’s mumble. Cheap and everything you want would work fine there.

There are ips on the site so you can check to see if it is fine for you.

Thanks for all the fast replies! Some good information :).

Does 500 fps really make that much of a difference opposed to 250 fps? If it does, why doesn’t the etf2l have rules about this? (or is it just between the two teams who are having a match?)

Any way, I think I know enough now. Multiplay is probably not the way to go, considering they don’t offer ftp access. I’ll have a look at all the other providers you guys named. Money is gonna be a limiting factor though. We’re not even in any leagues/divisions, so I don’t want to spend too much money on a server.

Thanks a lot!

EDIT:
Just wanted to say I gave Mumble a try and it’s way better than Vent. Better latency, in-game overlay (helpful if you don’t know everybody’s voice) and positional audio (haven’t got this working yet =/, even though I enabled the option in Mumble. Maybe I should d/l a new version of the TF2 plugin)

you need to get the lastest tf2.dll. In the next mumble version it’s going to update it by itself, for now you have to download it.

Edit: as I have been pm’ed quite often in the last 2 hours about this here the link: http://mumble.dbclan.de/plugins/tf2.dll

FPS thing is bullshit. The source engine only do the calculation on every tick, you can have 10000 FPS and it won’t do anything more than 250. So, all calculations are done 66 times a second. The server doesn’t do anything on the other frames.

Do not ever take a server which is more expensive and claim to be 1000 FPS.

thaCURSEDpie

will try that now

I cba explaining it all again after I tried to explain it already to those idiots on the steam forums: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=950016

But with this post you should understand : http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=11065108&postcount=38

1000FPS is just marketing bullshit. It’s exactly the same on HL1 engine with sys_ticrate 1000 or 10000 servers.

If you got some GSPs in friends, you can ask them and most, if not all of them know that high FPS server just do nothing at all. People just keep asking for them, and over 90% of servers rented are those high FPS ones.

The funniest is GSPs selling 2000,3000,4000,5000,6000…20000 FPS servers, when the max is 1000.

FPS thing is bullshit.

But Moose says he can clearly feel the difference between 256 fps and 500 fps… Surely it must do something!

Moose is on drugs.

Well, if it isn’t about the server fps, something else causes it because ppl used to refuse playing on our Multiplay NL server because of “low fps”. And I agree with them that it feels a lot smoother to play on Clanhost or i3D servers.

Thank you for the complements Moose :P
