Server rental - advice?

Hi, this is my first post on these forums :).
Me and a couple of other guys are setting up a new clan. Because of this we want to rent a TF2 server. BUT, we know nothing about renting a server.
I’ve been looking on the internet a little bit, and Multiplay has caught my attention (also due to them offering the pickup-channel). They seem to offer good service, with a “free” ventrilo server, so that’s a nice plus.
But before we’re going with them, I wanted to know if anyone of you has had experience with Multiplay. If so, was it good? Or can you point me to another company that can make me a better offer?
We’re mainly interested in running a clanserver, but it would be nice if it’d supported Sourcemod – and custom plugins – (so I can goof around with scripting a bit :) ).
Thanks in advance :)
thas a good idea, i like multiplay, but you have more cheap like 540hosting if you just want to run warserver… But depends if you want german/holand/uk server

Thanks for the quick replies!
It doesn’t really matter where the server is located, as long as it isn’t too far from where I live (Netherlands). So the UK is acceptable.
@Netsky
Will add you through my brother’s steam now (MightyMe).
I’d say NL is best location considering the multinational spread of our community.
UK seems to be good for a lot of people too.
I have used http://www.gameservers.com/ for over two years now for different games and i have only nice things to say about them. 14 player private server in NL cost $59.71 (€41,88) / 3 months and you get a site for free and Ventrilo or Team Speak 50% off.
Get clanhost, don’t get multiplay.
I have been managing Multiplay servers for more than a year now.
Here is my impression:
Pros:
– Stable servers
– High quality servers (good hit registration)
– You can choose whether you want the server located in UK or NL
– Low pings for most players (in the pickups israelis, russians and americans are playing)
– You can use ClanForge to manage your server. ClanForge is a webinterface to control and set up your server.
– In ClanForge you can restart your server
– You can enable SourceTV auto record
– In ClanForge you can download the sourcetv demos and server log files
– With ClanForge you can easily add lots of plugins
– You get 690 maps preinstalled and whenever someone uploads a new map to a multiplay server, it can also be found on your server
– Fast download for all maps
– Good support at #mpukhosting
Cons:
– You only get a 2 slot SourceTV (I’m not sure if other server hosts do better)
– You don’t have FTP access to the server, instead when you need to upload a map or a server plugin you will need to use ClanForge and then Support will deal with your request within 1-2 days
Multiplay UK is pretty bad for everyone from eastern Europe. Their nl servers are ok but have low server fps. Clanhost.nl and i3D.net have been nice.
To be honest, MultiPlay is one of the best options but after they had those few routing problems etc i was unsure so i bought a server from gameservers and they where surprisingly really good:
Pros:
Full FTP access
Never went down
Setting up the source tv was easy since you just type tv_enable 1 in the config thing and then you get 100 slots
Easy to install SourceMod, MetaMod etc by just one click.
You can move the server at anytime to anywhere in the world (I went from UK to Amsterdam and back again a few times :3) Only takes like 12 hours to move it MAX.
Easy to fix any problems etc by just clicking “Reinstall server” and it will reinstall it from scratch in a few hours
Cons:
The one time i was asking customer services something (was wanting to know if adding a STV to the server would lose my 13th slot or not) they took about 24 hours to respond (to me thats pretty quick but maybe other places are better)
I had about 0-5 choke occaisonally to the server, im guessing thats more my routing as seen as i get like 1-50 choke on every other server (50 being on pubs)
But tbh your best bet is probably finding a mate, or a good clan, and asking them if you can borrow their server for a match and see what its like with your teams routing.
Cons:
– You don’t have FTP access to the server, instead when you need to upload a map or a server plugin you will need to use ClanForge and then Support will deal with your request within 1-2 days
you do, but read-only :( This is quite sad, yes.
We’re mainly interested in running a clanserver, but it would be nice if it’d supported Sourcemod – and custom plugins – (so I can goof around with scripting a bit :) ).
Probably your best bet then.
Multiplay UK is pretty bad for everyone from eastern Europe. Their nl servers are ok but have low server fps.
As far as I know server fps is the same as the UK ones.
Try 85.236.109.24:27015 (NL) and 85.236.100.246:27215 (UK) with net_graph 4
Both have 256 fps

Then you definitely need FTP access.
Cons:
– You don’t have FTP access to the server, instead when you need to upload a map or a server plugin you will need to use ClanForge and then Support will deal with your request within 1-2 daysyou do, but read-only :( This is quite sad, yes.
That alone is the biggest possible reason you shouldn’t go with them. Your essentially not able to properly use what your paying for.
Personally, ive never really dealt with any GSP’s. Ive always prefered to just get VPS or dedi box to run it, but thats simply because you can then get your website, forum, fastdlserver, HLstatsX and everything else along with it included in the price.
