Reset your locks back to the original (333Mhz) and check temps.
Make sure you set your ram to 1:1 (333Mhz stock) and to lock your pci-e frequency to 100/101Mhz.

As I said earlier, the temps were ~50 degrees under load. Also trying to increase the FSB bit by bit is something I have done, with little success. For example, tried increasing my fsb by 7, which still caused instability. I set the RAM divider to be 1:1, meaning the RAM would run at stock speeds @ 400 FSB.
Thanks for the help guys, will try out some of these tomorrow. :)

Almost sounds like a voltage problem on your ram/cpu/fsb.
Check your ram voltage and raise the fsb voltage slightly.

Start by reading and not tweaking stuff. That will only lead to damaged hardware.

Google is with you and for example take a look at this.

It might also be the PSU that causes the problem. Yes it should be enough (maybe) but maybe you have 3 harddrives and some other shit in the computer. Is the PSU old? Tried with another PSU?

Because the only thing you should have to do with a E8400 is to change the FSB – Save and Quit. (I have no experience in that exact motherboard but with the P45 chipset it should not be hard to make that CPU scream.)

If you have to do more things to make it overclock 100MHz then it is either the motherboard or the PSU. I would bet on the PSU if you don’t have crappy settings in bios or the motherboard is crap :)

What voltages are you running btw? CPU and RAM

It’s not a cooler problem eoN. He should easily be able to OC by 150MHz (and even more) with the stock cooler, even with a shitty batch and no luck at all. I had my E6850 (3GHz) at more than 3.5GHz with the stock cooler a while ago and the temps were fine.

I think it’s something with your motherboard :/ Have you tried OCing it more ? Some mobos can have weird “fsb holes” and start doing bs sometimes (I had this problem a while ago, 380/390mhz fucked up everything while 400/410 was ok).

Yes. My P5B Deluxe also has a FSB fuckup. Can’t run at 399 or 400 or something, but 401 is fine (not sure about these numbers, but were in this range). I ran into that problem myself.

It might also be the PSU that causes the problem.

No, really it isn’t.

MASSIVE “FYI” TO ANYONE CONSIDERING UPGRADING OR BUILDING A PC:
Unless the system you are building is running like, 2x SLI GTX 295’s, 5+ Hard Drives and max OC’d Core i7, anything 600watts+ is overkill.

Toms Hardware (this was quite some time ago) did a test where they ran a quad core system (Q6600 @ 2.8GHz) and 2x 8800GT in SLI and all of this ran quite happily on a 450watt Corsair power supply (actual draw from the socket was measured at about 430watts while running Crysis). Trust me, unless your running some stupid 3x SLI setup, 600+ is a waste of money. 550-600watt Power Supply from a quality brand is what you want to be looking at. Chieftec, while not nesscesarily the absolute best their is, are certainly a fairly quality brand. My advice is to go with Corsair, Thermaltake, Seasonic, Antec.

No one else unless your digging up buckets of raving reviews from reputable sites.

/Rant over, sorry, its just something that really pisses me off when i read it, no offence directly to you mate. :)

Anyway, Back on-topic.

The OC problem to me sounds like a motherboard fault. Try overclocking the Northbridge to the maximum possible (reasonable) amount and see how that goes. Also get the RAM divider as low as possible just to make sure thats not a problem.

Another word of advice, not to the OP but anyone reading this thread thinking of overclocking themselves- Unless you have someone with you irl who knows what they are doing or you already have a reasonably good idea what your doing then don’t bother. Theres simply huge potential to break your PC by doing silly things that first time overclockers often won’t know about it. Overclocking isn’t difficult or particularly complicated, you just need to make sure you don’t do anything stupid or you’ll break potentially hundreds of £ worth of computer hardware.

The whole computer was bought and built around 10.12.08, just to clear some confusion. It was built for an optimal bangperbuck-ratio, hence the cheapish c2d. It only has the required components, 1 hdd and 1 dvd-drive. I’m probably going to upgrade my bios to see if that helps. Anything in particular to take note of before/after updating?

Pyle

Just don’t touch anything during the update, thats all.

Also, any experience with the manufacturers’ auto-updaters?

Which mobo you have? My bet is on a FSB problem at certain speeds.

Would be so much easier if you read the OP koetje. It’s MSI p45-neo3
