Need help with OC'ing.

As the topic says, I have some problems overclocking my E8400. As it is quite capable of going past FSB 400 (stock 333), and I myself am having trouble keeping my computer running @ FSB 350, which would increase the over-all clockspeed by a mere 150mhz. Here’s the list of my specs:
CPU: e8400
Mobo: MSI p45-neo3
GPU: ATi HD 4870 512mt
PSU: Chieftec 550W
RAM: 4 gigs of kingstons 800mhz 5-5-5-20.
I consider myself quite tech-savvy, and am willing to learn, but I just can’t understand what the problem here is. My computer reboots itself automatically when/before I get to windows, so I doubt it’s the heats. Also have adjusted my voltages back and forth both on my RAM and CPU, but neither helped. Have changed the FSB-RAM-multiplier thingie to keep my RAM freq at the ~same level, with it varying +-50 at tops.
Any ideas/help is appreciated. :)
Can’t check the temps, cause as I said can’t get to windows if overclocked. Can check the non-overclocked temps tho, if that would help. And I’ve got the stock cooler, but should be more than enough to take it to 3.6ghz.

Assumptions. No cpu is the same. I’ve got a E6600 and most people reacht 3.6 with it np, with a good cooler, but i can only reach 3,4 (tuniq tower 120). It’s just a matter of testing testing and testing. Maybe you just have bad luck :(
There’s no such bad luck that makes a cpu model that is highly overclockable in over 90% of cases completely non-overclockable. As I said in the op, even the smallest increases in clockspeed make my cpu crash on boot. I think I even tried increasing FSB by 7, which totals to an increase of 63 mhz and still crashed. Also ran some benchmarks, was ~50 degrees tops. Around 35 idle. Don’t understand how an increase in clockspeed can make the idle temp way over 50 degrees from 35 tho, since that would obviously be a requirement for a over-heating-caused-crash on startup, no?

Usually theres an option in BIOS ‘PC Health Status’ or similar, that will tell you the various temps. Have you a stock or aftermarket cooler?

I could check the temps from bios I guess, will report back when I can be arsed doing it. But I still doubt an increase of 15 degrees, think it’s more like something I forgot to turn off/on.
go into bios to check temps would be a good start, you should be able to make it that far. double (and triple) check that your cpu heatsink is fitted correctly and with the right amount of thermal paste. have you had the cpu for a while and just now started oc’ing or did you just install it?
I’ve had the cpu since christmas, and I tried to OC it back then without success, but let it go since I didn’t really need to extra processing power.
I thought the FSB on a E8400 was 1333?
Edit also just buy a new cheapish cooler and youll be able to get it to that, when people say on forums that they got it to that on stock usually they mean with high temps and with a very lucky batch.
Intel bus is quad pumped. 1333/4 = 333
I would definitely first start with checking your temps thru bios.
Check idle at non overclocked. Then check idle at mild overclock.
If there is really a 15degree diff if you overclock it slightly then redo your heatsink/paste etc.
It’s not a cooler problem eoN. He should easily be able to OC by 150MHz (and even more) with the stock cooler, even with a shitty batch and no luck at all. I had my E6850 (3GHz) at more than 3.5GHz with the stock cooler a while ago and the temps were fine.
I think it’s something with your motherboard :/ Have you tried OCing it more ? Some mobos can have weird “fsb holes” and start doing bs sometimes (I had this problem a while ago, 380/390mhz fucked up everything while 400/410 was ok).
It’s not the temps. Something is unstable ( you can’t boot windows )…. What I should do when I was you is to clock it back to standards and ( first test if you can run windows on standards, if not hardware is probably broken ) begin overclocking in little phases untill you have reached unstabillity. When you reach unstabillity you know which change made it unstable… Unstabillity in early phases is most of the time due to shortage of voltage. Increase this a little step ( + 0,1 V ) a time and try again.
ps: It’s also possible that other hardware is blocking your cpu’s oc because it reaches it’s limit, check this.. I’m 2 lazy to google your hardware specs : )
