How much of a performance increase would I get if I swapped my aging 8800gt for a GTX 260?

Not very much unless you play at a high resolution, Source engine is all about the CPU

Ah right. My CPU atm is the intel e6850 3ghz x2. Was thinking of a new CPU but really cba to update my mobo as well.

I was looking at the i7 920 Nehalem, but f knows if it’s compatible with my Asus Intel X38 mobo…….. If I did buy the 920, would I have to upgrade my mobo?

You would have to change both your motherboard and your ram.
Tbh if your looking to upgrade right now I’d go for an AMD/ATI configuration.
Or perhaps Intel/ATI, but i7 does cost alot more and only offers a slightly better performance in games.

intel/nvidia all the way tbh. Better OC possibilities + better drivers.
