Got a friend who needs a new graphics card for a new comp hes buying. Hes using one of those online choose the parts and we build it things but hes stuck on what card to get.

Hes thinking of the 9800 GT 1gb but I heard rumours from somewhere that the 9000 series had some benchmark problems.

Was thinking of reccomending the ATI 4800 series specifically the 4850 but hes not bothered about spending an extra 20 quid for say the 4870 if its better.

Any ideas on what to get?

altho the 4850 (which i have) is a great little card it does run extremely hot for what it is. its alot better than the 9800gt. i had the 8800gt which is basically the same card but smaller dye and i swapped it for the 4850 and i got alot better performance.
if your friend can show exactly how much hes willing to pay il recommend a card.

but so far if uv gotta good case and airflow then 4850…just make sure to check the temps

go for 4870, although it requires more power

4870 is probably the best price/performance card you can get atm. Very cheap, but performs great.

take 4870 with 1024mb though!
i got the 4870 512 and in some games the lack of memory is anoying.

Ive got the 512 and to be honest it works perfectly, if i was to buy a new graphics card right now i would of course go for the 1024 and crossfire :) but thats what im planning on doing in the future, problem is id need a new mobo and then i would feel obligated to get a new CPU and new ddr3 ram :x

I would advise against ATI cards, never found their drivers any good. Only had troubles with ATI and never any with nVidia cards. I’d gladly pay 20 euro’s more for the same performance but with proper driver support.

Value for Money gtx 260 is rubbish due to the price u have to pay : > ati HD 4870 1gb special edition is cheaper and gets the same amount of fps than most gtx cards : > price ranges from £110 to £150
