It turns the onboard amp on/up, which is needed for the 598s because of their high impedance. You should have it on and just use windows volume control if its too loud for you.

One last tip, the HD598s have high impedance so you will need to use the internal amp and set Exciter mode and 8 channel audio on to get the best out of them.
those setting are in the xonar card or some drivers or something ?
