Some knowledge
Widely regarded as the best lyric ever, Inspectah Decks verse on this (the first one) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xj8vPw3UbNw … never bettered.
Some more old school for you
Eric B and Rakim – Juice http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPkWYTUiPTo .. fantastic sample on this
early Crooklyn Clan from 1995 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VwIQTadcTg whilst Tupac was happening this is what New York was up to, at least the underground relevant bit of it. Party hiphop music.
My era of hip hop : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyswjkZJugI Rock The Bells… back before hip hop turned into rap. When it was about how great your lyrics were and your DJ was, how you were part of a proper crew and not every lyric was about how rich/gangster/hard/dangerous you were.
Right about now you’re about to be possessed by the sounds of Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phOW-CZJWT0
Fuck it,.. just watch this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZ5vk-4pFTc .. get knowledge of how hip hop emerged.
Then I got turned off by the whole gangsta explosion
Only 3 records reallymatter from this period to me at least (expect other people will strongly disagree) :
Nas – Illmatic : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeGsiub8EA0 (arguably the only hip hop album that ever really mattered according to some people)
Roots – Things Fall Apart : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWhyk1u2RSM
and this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jNyr6BJZuI
Couple of other tracks that turned me on from this era
Pharcyde – Ya Mamma : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8opPUInhOHQ
New Kingdom – Good Times : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVAq8NQxPeQ (also responsible for this slice of amazing UK TV http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zS24izhfRM)
Some more recent rap things for you
Action Bronson – The Symbol … fat man does rap : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2AHvZWojSc
Hayze feature Apathy – Life Is Hell … dunno, just grabs me, I think it is because he rhymes electro encephalographs : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52ZMDlHT85k
Open Mike Eagle – Nightmare … reminds me of doom rap era stuff, Gravediggaz and stuff : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSf7RvaSS4A
A current favourite, dat call out on the opening lyric : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOe2voq-FP0
Favourite crew right now is Doomtree by a country fucking mile
POS – Fuck Your Shit … reaction to everything that is wrong with current rap : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FY6VcJR2PE
Doomtree – Bangarang … IT HAS HAR MAR SUPERSTAR IN THE VIDEO : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2dX_k6MvWM
Dessa – Mineshaft … from the same crew, the lyrics are better than most ‘known’ male rappers, phenomenal word play : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CSSZuocA-0 … oh and she can sing.
Your Mileage May Vary.
Gang Starr
Mobb Deep
Tyler the Creator
Earl Sweatshirt
Cypress Hill
Biggie
Ice Cube
Wu-Tang
The Latin Kings :>
Nujabes
Ta-ku
Pretty baffled how no one has actually mentioned them yet especially Nujabes.
Maybe some wouldn’t define their music as Hip Hop but i definitely would.
Reasons for these two ? – I have a hard time explaining why i like certain music, these two just always seem to be able to get me into a good mood, there is definitely more to their music than to many other artist’s.
Other than those 2:
Souls of Mischief
Atmosphere
Wu-Tang
Mos Def
Kid Cudi
Pretty sure I am missing some but w/e.
