What equipment do i need to compose PROPOR dubstep/dnb? :D
Yep, some kind of DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) software. Basically a full production studio in 1 package. Every DAW app has it’s advantages and disadvantages.
Popular choices are:
– FL Studio (Fruity Loops): Easy to learn, but can be limiting when you get really advanced. The piano roll is unbeatable though imo.
– Ableton Live: I would recommend this, as it works really dynamic and lets you decide your own workflow, and you can really make tunes in a “jam-session” kind of way.
– Logic (if you are on OSX)
– Sonar (never used this but it has some cool features if you look on youtube for examples)
– Cubase (used to be very advanced, but all the other DAWs have most of it’s functions too now)
The similarity between all these software packages is that they are VSTi hosts. They all use the same type of plugins (virtual instruments, synthesizes), so basically any of these programs is fundamentally the same.
Another program that is very ready to use out-of-the-box is Reason. It works in a very specific way (it resembles actual audio hardware) and it doesn’t support external VSTi plugins, but what you get in the box is very good sounding, and I believe you get quite a good collection of samples to start with as well. Good luck :P
nvm :D

Fruity loops is shit.
Use Ableton.
Cubase is archaic.
Sonar is Cubase with a better UI & few good plugins.
Fruity Loops is for disabled children & current generation trance producers.
Reason is great for beginners, but can be limiting depending on the sound you’re after.
AbletonLive is the best there is.
Quoted from Steve
99% of every dubstep (and dnb) dj starts off with fruity loops
Don’t tell porkies, literally no one uses FL in dubstep..

FL Studio is not a bad choice, not only beginners use it.

Main stuff id reccomend…
DAW:absolutely vital, its all up to you, but FL studio is a little too simple for me, but if you’re starting out thats ok i suppose. Logic or Sonar/Cubase all the way.
Synthesizer Soft/Hard; for a soft vst to plug into your DAW, go for Z3ta+ or Massive (Z3ta+ is my fav outta the two) for a hard synth?-ask someone who knows more hahaha
Sequencer: This sequences the drums, and unless you want to use pre made loop packs all the time, you’re going to need one. Check if your DAW comes with one or do some research for one
Id reccomend you get some monitors as well. Makes a world of difference to your production…
Software I use to produce:
Reason 5
Plugins:
Massive (by Native Instruments)
Kontakt 4 (by Native Instruments)
Sylenth (free software)
and some basic plugins for Reason.
Basically you just need to have decent VSTi plugins with a basic LFO section (need to be able to change tone, speed, frequency etc to make it sound more complex) and some distortion plugins such as Ohmicide etc and you should be fine. Make sure that if you EQ it, you don’t do an overkill and pull the bass all the way up, because it might pressure down the rest of your track.
Hope this helps :)
RENOISE FTW!!!
Trackers rule and renoise is the best one…
