I’ve been quoted ~£800 bills by Toshiba to replace the motherboard in my Qosimo gayming laptop, which seems pretty fucking extortionate for a machine that’s already two years old.

It’s had a good run so I’m looking to weigh up my options…

I’m thinking of splashing out on a new desktop gaming rig.

Probably going for a prebuilt solution with warranty; what manufacturers do you recommend?

I’ve got an upper ceiling of about £2000, but I’d like to replace my monitor with something with a good refresh rate?

Is now a good time to buy, or are there any new technologies worth waiting for?

Why would you do that? Just build your own and get individual manufacturer warranties, you’ll save a bundle and can RMA yourself (much quicker).

Pointless, anyone who knows what they’re doing will tell you to get a £500 computer now and upgrade it as you go along. If you spend £2000 now it will be worth £500 in a few years. Don’t bother.

Well a less confrontational version of what Chris said, Why not have a bash at building it yourself? :)

Its not too difficult really, as long as you’re alright at putting things together. You don’t even need that much knowledge in the way of computers since (with the exception of the front on button/light/etc which is fiddly as hell), you can’t really plug anything into the wrong socket.

Also regarding warranties, you just have a warranty on each individual part instead of the whole machine, which is actually more convenient since you can just drop an old spare into the PC while its getting replaced instead of just not having a PC for 2 weeks.

If you’re up for it, post back with a budget and I’ll see what you can get.

edit: and ye, £2k is wayyyy more than you’d ever need to spend, if you’ve got a bit of cash to burn: £700 for the tower, £200 from the monitor, £100-150 for peripherals (headset, keyboard etc) and spend the rest of it on booze and hookers.

i didn’t mean to be confrontational :(

What they said.

It’s easier to build a computer than you think. Most people find it daunting but just go for it, you’ll learn a whole lot along the way and come out of it with more money and more skills.

Get a 120hz screen and spend about ~800-1000 quid on the machine itself (just a bit above what these guys are saying so you get 120fps stable in most games).

Well all I can say then is, PREPARE YOUR ANUS. :D

Alienware: http://files.pixelgaming.eu/stuff/alienwarewantstorapeadmirable.PNG
Custom Build: http://files.pixelgaming.eu/stuff/butoverclockersarestraight.PNG

Also I should note, the Alienware does not come with a monitor at all, so you’d be adding £200 on top of that to get the same Samsung one from the custom build.

Up to you mate, But it just seems insane to waste £600 because you cba imo. :(

edit: Split the difference (£300), and I’ll get the parts and ship it to you as a full machine. :P

OK! OK! I’ll build the damn thing…

I’m gonna splurge though >:E

If you CBA to build yourself, just compose the system on a online webshop that has a good reputation regarding service and aftersales, and pay extra for them to assemble it. It’s still better than prefab systems.

Graphics-wise GTX480 is still the fastest single-gpu card. Steer away from any dualgpu/sli/crossfire setups, as they still have minor microstuttering problems.

The Kingston SSDNow V G2 64GB (SNV425-S2) is a really affordable SSD with very good performance. It’s worth the buy imo if you have the money. Put your OS and Steam/Tf2 on it and you’ll be blazing.

PSUs in that picture guide aren’t the best (I think cause it’s outdated). Better ones: Antec Signature and Seasonic X-series (650 watt should be more than enough).

Other good cases are: Silverstone Fortress FT01/FT02, Antec P183, but tbh, the Antec Sonata (or Sonata Elite or something, if you want it without included PSU) is the best bang for your buck, if you don’t need too many fancy stuff.

edit: You can always go for an SLI-compatible motherboard to add a 2nd card in the future, but I still don’t recommend SLI for competitive gaming. You could also run SLI and disable the 2nd card if you experience microstutter.

love this baby http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3455#sp

but I scared, it will be too hot with i5/i7 and nice graphics, so bought a big, heavy pc with nice cooled body.

SLI is only useful if the fastest card available isn’t fast enough. And even then I’d prefer to get a 2 gpu on a single card solution.
