Hey folks!
I wanted to make some short clips and i did what Dusty said:
Here is the best way to get best quality in MY experience:
1. Record your clips in TF2 with high framerate
2. Render the clips in VirtualDub as uncompressed video (still with the high framerate)
3. Edit the clips as you like in your video editor
4. Export your video as uncompressed .avi with a framerate of 60
5. Use MeGui to render as x264 .mp4 following this tutorial http://infprod.com/index.php?site=tutorials&action=show&tutorialsID=414
I uploaded it to YT and here is my record fail: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiqqFE4HlFE
I dont know what I did wrong i hope u may can help me kkthx!
I think the problem is when you render it in VirtualDub. You need to change the framerate under Video>Framerate to the rate you recorded it in game. I’m assuming you didn’t change it and left it at 30 while you recorded in game at 60. Try that :)

Looks very much like it since the sound cuts out exactly halfway.
kk, will do next time
Thanks!

Also in tf2 render in 1280×720

yeah, im pretty sure that’s why :)
I have a problem too. I recorded the the clip in TF2 with Pldx movie config then encoded with ffmpeg. So i have an .mp4 file now. The problem is, when i want to edit in adobe premier pro (or vegas) the clip is not working or i dunno. The sound is ok, but the video stucks at the first second. :

don’t encode it after recording from tf2, here’s the best way IMO:
Record in TF2 to .tga’s and .wav with high framerate (ex. 120)
Open .tga’s and .wav in VirtualDub.
Set framerate in VirtualDub to whatever you recorded it at in TF2 (Ctrl+h -> set to 120)
Render as uncompressed .avi
Then edit in vegas/premiere/whatever.
This way you have high quality, high fps video with sound in one file :)

just a question. Why record to .tga ?

if you mean the preview video in vegas lags, it’s because vegas hates hd files
set the preview window to preview -> auto, highlight the clip in the timeline and press shift + b to prerender it

If you use lossless lagarith codec, and embed the sound into the video file, it’ll slow down your previewing significantly when editing, so I’d highly recommend keeping them separate. If you work with after effects, just make a composition for each video clip, and put the video and sound there together. Any changes you wish to make on it, can be done on that composition.

I’ve found the startmovie avi command to be buggy and generally crap :P

True, when the file size becomes to big!
