@ aeqvist: Tbh the effectiveness of that movement vs soldiers comes from his forwards/backwards movement more than the actual strafing, which seems much more erratic than most players, who will generally be +forward whilst strafing, +backwhile strafing or moving neither forwards or backwards while strafing.

It makes perfect sense if you think about it. Obviously soldiers are most consistent when trying to aim so that rockets hit the ground directly at the opponents feet because you still get the splash damage if you miss the direct hit, instead of the rocket continuing far past the target.

It’s much easier to over-compensate or under-compensate with rockets on the vertical axis than on the horizontal when faced with that sort of movement, and the vertical trajectory is much more important than the horizontal because it determines the distance the rocket travels (and thus the point at which the rocket hits the ground).

Tracking on the horizontal axis is easier, more practiced and a more natural movement than tracking vertically (and with the exception of high sens players it will generally be a quicker movement because of these factors) so it stands to reason that erratic forwards/backwards movement will be harder to counter as a soldier than the conventional, and often habitual strafing techniques we see players use in so many games.
