If he asked, I don’t see a problem really (assuming, the asked people allowed it too… :P).

Funny part is that the original things people uploaded were not (and cannot) be covered under (USA) copyright law (as we all know, USA copyright is all that matters on the internet). Video game footage is not covered under copyright.

So what he did may be morally reprehensible, but there is absolutely nothing you can do about it legally, when MightyMe DMCA’d the original upload of siN’s 1st compilation he was actually in the wrong.

Also people have been making compilations since forever and could be argued to fall under fair use.

siN also linked back to all the footage he compiled (giving all these people more exposure of clips nobody would care to look at again) somewhat fixing the moral argument.

But then again copyright is a huge fucking clusterfuck that needs to be cleaned up.

I didnt care about the copyright in the first place tbh, just about the ‘questionable morality’. Dunno about quintosh or anyone else obviously.

In this specific case (siN’s first video) he credited and linked back to every clip he included (have you seen any other compilation do that?).

About asking permission: Does *anyone* ask permission from Valve if they can upload their particular clip (rhetorical question)? So how come it’s suddenly not ok here?

Then there’s the part about asking permission and getting ‘no’ for an answer:
My personal opinion is that allowing people 100% control over their ‘intellectual property’ IS morally wrong. If you create a popular (or not) ‘thing’ online you simply do not (and should not) retain all ‘rights’ to it to the point of preventing anyone from creating derivative art from it. (Which is what happens when you make a funny TF2 video and then say that nobody is allowed to mash up your video).

So yeah those are my arguments explaining why I think siN was completely right in everything he did.

Except that I upload my videos to show to my friends, and siN get’s paid for his. So when he takes my video, adds it to his video, the money he gets is partially gained by my video :-)
