Don’t over saturate and avoid vignettes. Also avoid using a heavy two coloured gradient (like green at the bottom and blue at the top).

I’m pretty sure the numbers are off in that tutorial, I’ve followed it and it looks nothing like the preview images.

lol, 1.3 is completely ridiculous, hello orange tf2. and that gradient looks like utter crap…
The colour grading in that mygamingedge link is poor and actually breaks down image quality. Nothing against the guy, he’s just trying to help out with what he knows.
At some point I’ll be working out a proper training video for this sort of thing, as 9 out of 10 frag movies actually do colour grading that makes the image worse.
The science of colours is a huge course. Starting my art school, we actually spent a month just manually blending 50 shade perfect colour shades alone. (Didn’t expect that from the course: “interaction design”.) It’s not something I can pass on within a forum post, but I can give you some pointers:
Avoid over/under exposure. This is when the contrast is so high, you’ll have large light areas that turn completely white, shadow areas that turn completely black. Also, try to avoid black/grey shadows.
Balance warm/cold colours. Every colour has a complimentary colour, ie the one that is one the opposite side in the colour wheel. Use them wisely, it’s what the eye seeks, and too much use of one colour type gets tiresome. Its ok to have certain scenes with a hue towards one side. But, then you need to balance with other colours in other scenes. On this note, I should probably mention that the broder movie has too much purple.
The most common mistake, is use of too much contrast. The contrast in TF2 is adjusted by professionals with a lot more experience than some random guy who just cracked his first copy of an semi pro video editing program (in general, not specific).
One of the videos linked here shows how Vegas uses the tool “curves”. This is similar to what most professionals use in video/imaging programs. I recommend learning it.
