Since there’s been quite a few of these threads morf and I thought there might be interest in a version for moviemaking. I always get people messaging me on IRC or Steam wanting help with moviemaking, so hopefully this will be helpful to some people. You can ask us anything from the basics to more technical things like 3D, but make sure you check out the tutorials on pldx first!

I mainly use Sony Vegas and a little After Effects for text animations etc, and Morf uses After Effects for the majority of his movies.

Thank you for making this thread. I will try to think of some questions

Like for example in your movies/ subtitle’s movies as well you can’t really find that much sync, just few places or even there aren’t anything. Why is everyone liking your/ subtitle’s movies and for example not others who did the same basically, like decent music, frags and was a nice movie overall. Like maybe the kills aren’t that great or the smooths/ thirdperson views which makes the movie better and nicer to watch or smth.

In short: How to make a nice movie without any really sync but really nice to watch?

tesco

mrp.

decap: why did you stop making tf2 movies?

also, i know, morf is experimenting with a cod4 movie – at least, he told me that a few weeks ago – how’s it going?

I fail at using the pldx tool and virtual dub, do you do mentoring? :D

oh this is awesome!

Is there any third party plugins/effects that you couldn’t edit without?

What’s the secret to awesome transitions?

What’s the biggest mistake people make when using colour corrections?

Do you use any sort of filing system for the demos people send you? Care to share some tips about that? :)

What do you personally look for in a song that you’re gonna use in a movie?

Can you post your rendering settings in Sony Vegas?

How often do you make transitions in the music (say, cutting out a bit or adding another layer to add effect)?

Do you think too many transitions can ruin the flow of the music?

I recorded a few clips but I got my hands on another project so I didn’t really put my mind to it.

What is it you’re having trouble with?

Probably not, you can achieve close to the same result with default effects in After Effects as you can in Magic Bullet Looks, although I prefer using Looks as it offers a better interface and a wider variety.

Not really sure, a smooth is a pretty much a solid transition as long as it is in context with the present footage.

Alter the colours too much, the default colours in TF2 are really crisp when adding a simple and cool colour grading. I always try to make the beautiful colours pop and that’s about it.

Not really, the only “sorting” I use is the way I entitle the demofiles; map_playername_area_action_tick (although I prefer saving all the ticks in a separate .txt for some reason).

– Yoyotech for TF2-movie. Definately The Contenders 2 for outsider, hands down.
