Help with mediocre frag video

Well I feel with my first video done that I still want to continue to devolpe my skills. I am trying to do a mini-clp every week if possilbe in preperation for S8 where I have a video planned.
So for starters I got two question:
How does Cla change only certain parts of the video white, example in Copyleft, I tried change to colour and I could not select white and also a lot of things are considerd that shade of red.
Secondly, in more than one video I notice a transtions where parts of the next clip overlay over the previous clip. I was wondering how I would do this.
Well for the overlay if you are using sony vegas (I THINK, I also happen to be immensely fucktarted so this might be wrong!) you can drag a clip across the timeline so that it overlaps another clip. Just with your mouse. And drag. And it goes over the other clip. Although I’ve never used it I’ve just happened across it in video editing accidents. Although, I might not even be talking about the same thing you are talking about. See above parentheses.
