So, right now all I can record is firstperson & various thirdperson views using the pldx tool, these are great but they obviously limit my options. I would like to record static shots from different angles and perspectives with maybe some slight rotation included, im not interested in the over the top fly through smoothing stuff and I have no idea how to achieve that technique, hence ze post.
Probably the best example of what I mean is the start of the MMM movie.http://www.pldx.com/movie/1148/Muscle_Milk_and_Moolians/ Please help the noob out, thanks.
Im not sure what you mean, but I think you mean smoothing. This is the only way to fly-through on the air and recording people.
Then again there are the Source-TV demos (STV), where you can fly through (you cant smooth STV demos) and get everyones POV.

For a static camera you can use the drive function in the demoui (shift+F2 to open). Remove viewmodels, remove hud if wanted, then hold the drive button and place the camera where you need it. When you release the button you can only bring up and down the demoui as well as the console, you can’t actually use the demoui until you press the drive button again so you can’t pause/unpause etc.
As you probably can tell this is kind of a quick and dirty way to do things, if you plan on doing any sort of serious movie editing you should learn how to smooth, it’s not too hard and will go really quick once you get the hang of it.

btw, I was always curious how to make a rotation around the model when the game is paused. I’ve seen it several times in movies. For example the beginning of YoYoTech fragmovie:

Just guessing here (and stupidly so), but would the engine maybe differentiate between ‘pause’ and ‘0% playback speed’?

stopping (or pausing) the game isn’t the problem. I’m more interested in how to rotate the camera. Because if you’re in thirdperson mode the camera sticks to the model at a certain point. And I need it moving. =

iirc. i don’t have my cvarlist here but iirc those are the ones. first is for distance, second is for rotation.

I know these commands but they keep the camera static. When I need it to be in motion.

The camera does not move immediately. Set a var and then do startmovie straight after.
when in thirdperson mode in the pldx tool press 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 for different rotations.

I stop the game, like 0%, paused.
Then I put it on thirdperson and start recording (startmovie..) at the same time I start pressing the arrow keys under the ”home, end.. etc.” keys.
This will start rotating it.
Always wanted to know if it would be possible to smooth while everything is paused.

I think this wouldnt be possible without the lines showing up ? What do you think ?

iirc izi8 did it in one of his recent movies, maybe ask him.
Thanks tasKu & iQue for the replies. Are you saying that I just have to learn smoothing in order to do any kind of static shots from perspectives other than firstperson and thirdperson then?.. like its a necessity

That worked. thx a lot! I did a small test and will post it in the frag clip topic a bit latter.
