I always tought obscure looked very nice. The snow provides great contrast with the player models which is really nice. Most objects in the map have their function and aren’t distracting. I’d say obscure is as detailed as is neccesary. A 3d skybox might look good or something, but it’s certainly not something that NEEDS to be in a map.

That said, gullywash is an example of a map that looks very good, has a 3d skybox and also plays very well.

Indeed Racio the 3dskybox is being worked on and the sounds too, something has been added to cp1 area which i think will add a little more diversity for the attackers.

Thanks to Parva and the MP TF2 Team, they’ve given me a public TF2 server to host cp_obscure_rc1 on, i know various clanned players who have a public server have been playing this, but for those that don’t or even those who do, pop along tonight or during this week! :D

I found that you can hide stickies inside the stairs on pretty much all the stairs on the map. I don’t know if this is something you can do anything about as I also noticed it can be done on for example cp_granary. But I thought I’d mention it anyway.

Gullywash looks… weird in places, but it’s final point is really really well done.

How to improve it visually
a) Some weird exterior beams on buildings, those horizontal crossbeams just look a bit weird (I think the largest building on the left looking towards mid has them).
b) Virtually no detailing on the interior of every building except the final point, unless something dramatic changed in the newer versions.
c) No 3D skybox D: (my one doesn’t have one yet either :D)
d) It needs more.. story, you’ve got a shipping container in the middle of a snowy plain with no road tracks towards it. You should add an overlay path (can be done in the overlay editor by shift+dragging the overlays “vertices” towards another overlay’s, and they’ll snap), through and under the crate, and under the erm… chokepoint on the left, then either have it fade out somehow, or add a metal door to a side wall to make it look like there’s a garage there.
e) I don’t know about you, but the 2nd point UFO is a bit weird, it’s not really something you’d expect to find in a logging plant. You could make it a rocky/snowy outcrop coming out of the snow.
f) Curvy roof here http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1706584/cp_obscure_beta%20screenshots/cp_obscure_beta0005.jpg looks awful (it’s also way too thick). Making the building below it concrete (fitting in aesthetically with the base inside it), will allow you to justify the curvature, and you can use the red/blue versions of concretewall001 to give visual indication of the team. The flat roof on the left is also a big no no thematically, especially on RED’s side – angular geometry is a defining characteristic of RED, and the flat roof simply doesn’t cut it.

I could go on, but these are some starting points for improvements.

It’s the little things that make the map! Could need some more eye candy in places, but overall it’s more than good enough. Some places that could need some touching up:

I think you said before that you had troubles with keeping performance up at this area, but if you can you might want to consider adding just something. Doesn’t have to be much, maybe some barrels or something. The little sidepath to the left of the point also feels a bit empty. Maybe some pipes that’s going along the wall?

The second point looks awesome overall, but the ground textures get very samey. Some tire tracks or similar across the yard maybe to spice things up?

In terms of gameplay though it’s an absolutely amazing map and definitely one of my favourites. Keep it up <3

Thank you Krull, i shall get this fixed asap :-).

Randalf ty for the pointers and constructive feedback what you’ve stated has given me more in sight to detailing/clarity. I especially like pointer d) ty for the info.

Some really good pointers iQue will look into them as well i especially like the tracks idea.

All of these suggestions are being processed day by day and it’s helping the map so i thank you all 3 for your posts :)

This doesn’t help me, can you tell me your computer specifications as i’m pretty sure the map is tested on a worse spec than yours and it doesn’t run so bad only when more than 16 ppl join the server it starts to affect the duff slow ass crap hardware it’s tested on.

Also Honeymustard i couldn’t replicate that really really weird bug you showed me in the screenshot, we checked in hammer and it’s firm to the wall dude…can i ask you to try and do the same again with same gfx settings/config and see if u get it. If you don’t then its a gfx glitch from whatever commands you are using…

I tried various thins to replicate it i couldn’t…

And yes vazz your right it is a mid sized health pack :p
