Hey, People of ETF2L!
I’m a mapper who is working on a 3CP Map (GravelPit-Style), and I’d like it to be geared towards competitive players (like you!). The problem is, I have never played competitive tf2 before (that’s where you come in)! I’m wondering what you would like to see in a 3CP map, and what works and what doesn’t work (in Gravel Pit and other 3CP maps). Any thoughts/ideas will greatly appreciated!
Cheers,

In the official tf2 stats BLU actually wins gpit more often than RED, which is very rare for A/D maps. Maybe that’s the key for making a good A/D map for competitive tf2.

You should check out this article by Vince at tf2maps.net http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=17220

“If you want to make an attack/defend map that is viable for competitive play, you need to learn from Gravel pit and why the other maps are not Gravel pit. At the same time, you must not make a Gravel pit clone.”

Maybe dont bother with having the first 2 points open for capture staright away. No-one ever tries to defend both A and B on Gravel, making it more of a 2CP map imho, maybe have just A open to begin with then have B open after 3 or 4 or more minutes if A isn’t capped?

I like the fact Gravel’s CP’s cap slowly, having time to get wiped on defence but still have a chance of getting back in time to save the point helps make Gravel exciting and dynamic.

Tonnes of height available on all the CP’s on Gravel.

Good luck.

But that’s exactly what makes gpit dynamic and awesome!

I dont think having the medic sat in spawn whilst a couple of scouts and a solly go and cap A particularly ‘dynamic’, in fact quite the reverse. It means defenders just sit at B and attackers try to break down the defence.

Having another point open after a few minutes would be much more ‘dynamic’ as the decision to split forces becomes much more viable, especially with the slow cap times already mentioned.

They’ve started capping B guys…
It’s only times 2, I’ll go…
Shit, it’s a combo…I’m down.
Push B guys, lets go stop it, scouts stay here..
Scouts in on A…with a solly…SHITTTTTT!
Combo down on B, lets’ get to A…go go go..
Nearly capped it….
Arghhhh!

Now that’s dynamic!

That’s a choice a team makes. It’s only one of the many ways you can play this map.
Besides I enjoy my mid-game smoke.

I’ve seen teams switch defense for the first 1-2 minutes of the map. On the attacking side of things, getting your med to A doesn’t mean he can’t get back to spawn to push through hallways to B.

Same for B->spawn->A :P

not that it matters much cause its practically the same as using the AB connector…

Now that all depends on your medic. Still cant get that bloody rock jump thingy myself, but then, I’m bad.

Push a-b tunnel guys….guys….GUYS!!!

The fact seems to be though that most matches, especially officials, on G’pit have A given up for free, or maybe a sniper or whatnot to try to force/drop uber as a token gesture, then turtle B for as long as possible.

Whether your med stays in spawn or not is largely un-important, but that’s evolved because of the risks of taking him to A, (sniper/hidden ninja etc.), giving very little reward as it’s almost never guarded with anything that would require huge health buffs or an uber.

Having a point open after a few minutes could offer some interesting variations, especially if capping B opened a couple of extra routes to A for example.

Worst thing about Gravelpit? When you’re trying to break down a good defence over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again, it’s just frustrating and boring. If by running off to cap the other point opened up a new route, a new, better and faster route, that would make it less boring and frustrating.

I dunno, just throwing an idea out there…

cp_steel is a fun map, definitely not boring at all.

On defense it allows for a nice kritz though :Ddd

Have a point with a bit for height advantage for the defenders, a bit of cover for offensive team, think about Scouts and what they can double jump to, think about sniper sightlines, think about the distance between respawn for each point, think about different routes a team can attack a point and think about different defensive options teams have.

I don’t think steels issues lie in the ‘cap to gain a new route’ dynamic (which is in all honestly terribly pulled off anyway) I believe it’s more in extremely boring points, none of them have anything interesting on them.
