Mapmaking, huge dilemma.

Hello folks,

I have been working on a fast paced 5cp “Push/Defend” map for some time now, and am aiming to take a shot at the competetive community with it.
I Can’t go too far into details because i’m still in pre-alpha phases.
(Excuse me for the fact that I cannot provide pictures yet)

My dilemma is: Should I make the map “mirrored” Like all 5cp maps or should I take a different approach and flip one side of the map?
(Examples below, A and B describe the map layout on that side)

A _ B
(Middle — normal)
B _ A

A _ B
(Middle — flipped)
A _ B

That means players of the same classes will generally meet each other head-on. The middle point can be designed around this kind of play but…
Could the flip mean there will be a favorable team? If yes, What advantages would one of the teams have and are these big enough to be game changing? Or are there any other problems I have overlooked?

More Relevant info:
– There is a right, bottom and left route to mid. The medic cannot roll out left and bottom is not recommended. I’d like it to stay this way.
However…
– The left route when attacking from mid gives you a height advantage. If the map is not mirorred attacking teams might reach this place too fast/easily.
– If the map is not mirrored, the distance between the two right rollout sides will be fairly big. Propably causing the team that wins mid to barely ever take the route when attacking.

I would like to hear all your answers, thoughts and idea’s on this issue so I can continue mapping and hopefully bring out version_a1 in a week or two.

And please ask if something is unclear.

This would undoubtedly provide advantages (or percieved advantages) for one of the teams.

I generally (and I think most people would) prefer ABCBA. It’s an interesting idea, but I don’t think it would work.

If one point is easier to defend then there is a huge advantages and disadvantages to pick either blue or red. Always mirror your map in 5cp. Unless its an A/D map.

Will Being able to spam around corners and jump of certain walls a bit easier really have so much of an impact though? It may also be mentioned that each team has their own advantages.

I’ll put it like this: if for instance granary would be flipped (some fiddling with the crates involved would it break the map? (Y/N)

(Note: I’m not simply trying to defend my idea since i’m open to both mirrored and normal but I would love to see this mirror thing working somehow)

maybe if you can cap the last 2 points in any order.

If you are asking what the competitive community want, they will want it as all other 5cp maps (badlands, granary, etc.)

There’s already a symmetrical map called cp_crossroads (read symmetrical – not mirrored symmetry). It didn’t play as well as mirrored symmetrical maps.

Bl and grana etc. aren’t mirrored…

Rotational symmetry is where it’s at ^_^

this could still mean a game is won or lost through map design imbalance, and this should never be the case. there will always be imbalances you dont prepare for if you try and be fancy. just go with mirrored if you want it to be played competitively.

I have heard enough now Mods can lock the thread.

I will:
Make a mirrored Version and fiddle with the left and right attacking exits from mid so the route with the height advantage is the one that takes longer to reach. Thanks for the feedback!
