I’ve given some thought to the matter of a ladder as basis for pcws. The structure of the ladder I came up with looks something like this:

say 83 teams join the ladder, you divide it up into groups of 10 teams (similar to the etf2l league). In this case you would have a bottom group of 13 teams. This initial grouping will have to be done by the admins. The teams can then only challenge teams from their own group. All teams must play a minimum of 3 (or 5 or any other appropiate number) of matches during 2 weeks. The team with the highest win/loss ratio will get the 1st place in their group (assuming draws are impossible. With draws allowed, you will need to augment this ratio somehow). I base it on win/loss ratio instead of actual wins to prevent teams advancing based solely on activity and not skill. The team with the second highest win/loss ratio will get the 2nd place and so on. Teams that do not play the requisite number of games, are placed in the bottom. At the end of two weeks the bottom two teams of a group swap positions with the top two teams of the group below. Obviously you will have to clear stats every two weeks. You could still keep a “global” stats page describing the total win/loss etc. but every two weeks you get new competitors, and thus your stats from the previous group says nothing of your skill relative to the new group.

As you can see this is very similar to the league, but thats the point. The leagues is already succesful, so what you really need is a version of the league that can continue forever (in lieu of a ladder) and accept new teams fluidly, which is more or less what I’ve described above.

The idea is that if you can encourage all teams to organize their pcws through the ladder, you will not only solve problems with activity, but you will also have plenty of information available on new teams to place them accurately in the main league (assuming they actually play in the ladder). If the teams do all their pcws through the ladder, then their position on the ladder should be accurate of their skill, thus giving the teams a tool to organize pcws against teams of equal skill. Both the ladder and the teams benefit (the ladder through activity and the teams through good pcws). Thus the ladder should (hopefully) not have problems attracting teams who are looking for fair pcws, but it all hinges on whether you can get the message of the ladder as a “pcw organizer” out there.

anyway, that’s my $.02 (or “25 øre” as we say where I come from :P). If it’s been done before I’d like a link to it. In any case I’d be very interested in constructive criticsm as it took me some time to come up with :)

Yeah sounds very good. My clan was created soon before the 4th Season sign-ups ended and even if we signed up there would be no scense, and now there isn’t really where to play. I HATE esl.. This site fails so much, they do all about the money. If you are not a premium member it’s like you don’t exsist. Can’t even view your fu***** awards man :( They send you an e-mail (http://i43.tinypic.com/i2rmdl.jpg) that practicly sais pay or don’t compete at all

AnAkkk

I don’t think a ladder should work, there would not be a lot of teams.

bait, why do you care so much about awards? lol it’s not like it’s important. You don’t have to pay to join leagues/ladders…

This whole concept should be tested for a month with those willing to participate, there’s no point just throwing this idea in the garbage… but it’d be cool if something like this could run along side the Leagues.

Just get 40 teams willing to participate for a month and see how it goes.

Ladders are garbage.

Aye, if you want ladder, try the ED 6v6 one :

If my sources are correct, the ED ladder isn’t exactly the most active thing in the world. I think the whole reason that a Ladder was suggested here in the first place, is because of the level of activity here.

With 180 teams in Season 4, it’s very easily one of the busiest leagues running.

ED and ESL probably had too much focus over a number of games, and thus coming top in any of those ladders has very little meaning. If you actually have a site that focuses on a particular game, then it’s more meaningful. TheLadder.org was a website that focused on Tribes2 for sometime, and some of the players from there will know what I’m talking about by how successful it was. It actually gets pretty interesting sometimes, especially when you get teams that whole the top of the ladder for a long time, only to be kicked off by a new and flourishing team.

There’s only about 10 active teams on the ED ladder. It would be better to find/start up a more active ladder as it is good for a few friendly practice matches. But then again they’re never hard to come by, are they?
