Player change during Cups

Just need a quick clarification on the rule 1.7.3 One team change per competition allowed
Is this applicable for cups as well like 2v2 etc? So if a player who’s part of a team gets kicked out in an early round, he/she can join a team that’s gone through and continue their run in the cup? This sounds a bit dodgy to me :/
