[ETF2L] Should we restrict non-Latin names?

ETF2L currently allows a wide range of unicode characters in player and team names. As a result, we have a large number of team names that are effectively gibberish to an English speaker, such as these:

http://etf2l.org/teams/18474/
http://etf2l.org/teams/12604/
http://etf2l.org/teams/11701/

There are a number of issues with names that can’t be transcribed into English, two of them being the most problematic:

1. It’s difficult to talk about a player or team you have or will play against, since their name is indecipherable to you. You’re forced to use profile links to illustrate who you are talking about.

2. It’s difficult to look up such a team/player without going through a cup tree or match page – since your keyboard does not have the characters used in their name, you may not be able to find them on ETF2L using the search function.

Here are a few issues we’d like your opinion on:

1. Do you think restricting ETF2L player and team names to numbers, letters and some punctuation (:.-_/) is a good idea?

2. Should existing names with Unicode be retained without changes, or forcibly converted?

3. What should ETF2L do about team names that contain no US English characters at all?

Depends on the solution to issues 2 and 3 in the OP.

I don’t really even find this as a problem, granted that most teams that do have special letters are non-6v6 or HL teams so they would be rather referred to “this person’s bball team with this guy” for example.

If the special letters do cause a huge trouble then I would understand the cause, but otherwise I don’t really see the point on restricting them since it’s nothing but bothering other people to change names if they would want to keep them.

Restrict it to Prem and Div 1 teams maybe?

We’d like to implement these restrictions on the profile editor level – you would not be allowed to save a Unicode team name on the profile editor. Editing team profiles is completely unrelatedto what competitions or divisions the team is or was signed up for.

This change would mainly concerns team names – player name changes are performed by league admins, who generally do not agree to change a player’s name to complete gibberish.

I would but it doesn’t seem like a huge issue.

Restrict it. There is plenty room on the description field to express their feeling.
