New player confused about Username/Nickname

I registered here just for the Highlander Open, so please cut me some slack if this question sounds stupid.
I used different names for username and nickname, under the assumption that username should match the one that appears ingame when playing TF2, and that nickname is any name used for forums only. Can someone tell me if this is right? If it’s not right, how do I contact an admin to fix it?

Your nickname is the one shown in the forums and on match pages etc.
Your username is more or less obsolete now that we use Steam Sign In – before that it was basically your account name.
Check out how to contact an admin at Help > Support, in the menu bar on top.

So nickname should match the name I use ingame via Steam?
