There are 4 open spots in Season 17 Premiership. Maybe 5 if Team Decerto get slapped with the hijack rule. Let’s assume 4.
There are six teams who have applied for these 4 spots.

In an ideal world you would make these teams compete to prove who deserves the spots, but the admins have a schedule and want the least hassle.
I guess the ultimate fairest way would be to play a 6 team round robin where every team plays each other once. At first I thought this would be impractical, but it could be played out in 5 rounds, 3 matches at a time. Now if you are talking single map best of 1s, that could be done in an extended evening of play. Most Prem teams play 4 maps in a night, this would be 5 with little breaks probably requiring 3 hours to complete. Round Robins can also lead to ties in the rankings, but with a pool of 6 and us only needing to decide the top 4 or bottom 2 I think we could cross that bridge when we come to it with future tiebreakers.
Obviously the hard part about playoffs is scheduling, finding a day or days when 6 teams can have 6 players could be tricky. In fact this seems to be the admin teams biggest fear, but perhaps it would be wise to ask the teams first?
There are a few other systems I will propose, but I’ll put this one up first and see if we can burn it down or not.
Also I would invite the 6 teams to post which evenings they would be available to play on next week Sunday 19th – Sunday 26th. This is not leaugally (ha!) binding, just to get an idea if scheduling is a real issue or not.
Let’s talk it out!

In case of a tie just do like ESEA does. The one with the most rounds gets the promotion. If it’s still tied, the one with the least rounds lost gets the promotion. I guess tiebreaker matches are preferred but in such a tight time schedule, opting for this solution seems better.

Round robin is way too much time consumming to be played in one night. A single delay in one game and everyone ends up playing until very late.
Your idea of 3 top seeded teams playing each a lesser opponent and a round robin between the 3 losers of those matches on another night would be better imo.
ok: scratch that. nvm
