Infinite overtime until one team caps.
You can break it up in whatever intervals you like, but please lord make a golden capend in an actual fucking cap!
Imagine if we had infinite overtime on tonight’s map with potential intervals. We’d still be playing. Then potentially the same on Gully. Reminds me of that old wotr vs excello etf2l cup final that went to 7 maps or something (including Dustbowl) cos of draws.
Infinite overtime works well in some sports, like basketball, where points are extremely easy to come by.
There is no perfect GC solution. They’re like penalty shootouts: kind of unfair feeling and sometimes unsatisfying endings to games. Yet they’re more often than not also dramatic and a lot of fun. And you find a winner pretty quickly.
(Not saying that the rule can’t be improved, just saying that in essence it’s fine and ppl are totally overreacting.)

I remember that game. Awesome show by both teams.

penalties actually work because the objective of the game, scoring goals, is achieved. in football after extra time they don’t say “right lads, Team A had the ball at the end, Team B loses” the objective of the game (capping last) needs to be achieved somehow.
Imagine a golden cap round with no timelimit on cp_freight_final1 with two teams, that shamelessly defend the last point with 2 heavies and a sentry gun.

Nonsense
Taking shots from a fixed position has few resemblances to the actual play of football (11v11). Playing a capture point that isn’t last for the win, doesn’t differ that much from playing a capture point that is last for the win. If you really want to make an argument against it, come up with something better then “it’s shit”, because it’s a ton better then penalties are for football [link] .
Why not introduce a win-draw-lose point system, or a map-win system?
Like if you win, you get 2 pts, draw 1pt, lose 0pt for a map. After 2 games, total up, whoever got more points, win. If it’s still even, reinforce koth 1 round (or bo3, if you wish, since it’s so short).
Another alternative is you count points scored per map. say if you won 5-4 and later on won 2-0, the total would be 7-4, and thus a clear winner is seen for sure. In the case of a draw, again, go for koth bo1/3 because it’s usually short.
If you could implement these, the golden cap rule would surely be obsolete, since teams always have the urge to win with a clear margin, and thus encourages good playstyles and promises interesting matches.
I know for a fact that AsiaFortress League used to implement the total points per map system, and generally tiebreakers are rare. And if they do have a tiebreaker, it’s a full third map with the cumulative point system implemented, and players were always satisfied with the outcome.
play teamdeathmatch without respawn and the last man standing wins the match (maybe bo3)
or just do heavyboxing
This idea that we would have a never ending battle is amusing!
I’d love to see some actual stats on how many of the maps that went to golden cap weren’t settled within the 10 minutes this season…
I imagine it’s quite rare because the only time I’ve heard of it has been in the relegation playoffs and in the grand final, but I’d only be making an assumption there… just like the 10 minute rule :>
Then of the teams that won under the 10 minute rule, ask how many were satisfied with that victory? No one wants to win that way, let alone lose that way.
Anyone who watches or plays TF2 knows that capturing the middle point means exactly fuck all. Control points are lost and won in seconds.
Hell, how many times have we seen Team Dignitas lose middle only to wipe their opponents at spire and push right back to the enemy last?
Winning for holding middle is like winning for being awarded a throw-in; it has no relation to scoring a goal, although it may lead to one.
Let’s not fool ourselves that we are saving people’s precious time with this arbitrary 10 minute limit. It’s pointless rule made up by pencil pushers :S

141 maps ended in a golden cap this season (including the play-offs)
109 of these (or 77,3 %) have been decided by one team capping all 5 points
15 (or 10,64 %) ended in a stalemate after 10 minutes, the team that held mid won
15 screenshots have been missing so I could not tell if one team capped all 5 points
2 (or 1,42 %) golden cap wins have been entered incorrectly :3
So of the 124 maps that have been submitted correctly, ~ 12 % ended in a stalemate.
(no liability assumed)
