GibbZ here with some mild “ranting” and shiz:
So etf2l; I personally feel as the game has developed, you, as a league, have not kept up to pace with competition from other leagues. This hit me even harder after reading dunc’s very well written peice on vanillatf2. He may be a cunt, but he’s a clever cunt. Currently we have ESL offering us a new updated anti-cheat, prizes, and a “shot to go big” (as ESL is a major gaming league for several games); Wireplay (yes, once known as a more lightweight “joke” league) offering a £500 cash prize (That’s a few pints may I add) and servers! But what is it that REALLY attracts the higher end players to these leagues? The weapon bans! Vanilla + medic unlocks (+ bonk and a few more aswell – the balanced ones!).
I’m kind of writing this now, not as a nag or a rant, but I would like to know, in public, what you plan to do to keep the teams interested. It seems to me you’ve just been hanging on for the last few seasons offering a plethora of teams as your only initiative to sign up (oh don’t forget 6 steelseries headsets!). Weapon bans has always been shakey aswell for etf2l and now the new downiefest, I mean update, has been released; What do you plan to do?
I know it’s a hard situation as we may well have a divide in the scene – and tbh I actually blame valve – What were they thinking?! – But at the end of the day whats the dealio?
I would like to know what your situation on weapon bans will be; and how the rest of the community sees it.
AND
What can you offer as a league against the other leagues (who are now becoming tighter competition than ever)?
I mean with all the visitors you get and with the ads and donations surely there is something more you can do? Is ALL that money going towards hosting?
Thread for people to discuss and rant.
No flaming, try to keep trolling to a minimum.
Please no locking! Let’s keep it civil. This isn’t an argument, it’s a debate ;)
well its interesting you mention us at Wireplay, but the reality is that we are still not attracting that many teams, last season we had 131 teams with no advertising. This year we advertised on vanilla/here and cadred, and we havnt hit 100 teams yet with signups nearly closing…..
so even though other leagues may try, even if ETF2L doesnt offer much, I still cant see people moving on and I reckon they’ll just end up staying here…
Well that’s quite a sad situation as I have much respect for wireplay for trying to grow and keeping with the demand from the scene.

About wireplay. Last season we were playing it, we scheduled our matches, but other teams just didnt show up. Admins told us to replay that in other day. That’s the most annoying in that league, teams can ignore match and they have no punishment for it. We had mostly everygame ignored, after this we won’t play this league again.
Hopefully you get the point.

I think its all about the community, Some of the top teams, may really play to win and get money, however alot of teams that play in ETF2L just to have fun.
Despite all the trolling, I wasn’t too keen in seeing most unlocks allowed, and this update has really sealed the deal. I’d much prefer it if we kept the game fairly consistent (as most good competitive games do) as it’s clear these unlocks are not targeted to the competitive community.
As Valve aren’t really supporting the 6v6 format, it’s up to us as a community to play the game in a way we love. F2’s already made something to let us choose between the different formats, be it no Polycount or Vanilla+medic.
Since there’s so many different opinions between the two extremes on the matter, it may be best to just split the community between those who want unlocks and those who don’t, by creating different leagues. That way everyone can play the game the way they want.
I don’t have the numbers, but the community doesn’t seem THAT small that it can’t support two different rulesets. Most of those established in the comp scene will likely join the Vanilla league, with the rest joining the Unlocks league. If anything, the Vanilla league will be smaller, probably around Div1 – Div 3/4 in number. This is still workable as a league.
On the other hand, the Unlocks league would probably support the bigger half of the current scene, looking at the numbers from Div6/Highlander.
It isn’t to say we can’t do things with Valve like suggest “good” competitive weapons as a joint effort. However, it’s unlikely any such initiative would be implemented quickly let alone at all, so it’s up to us to play the game how we want and change the metagame through things we CAN control, like custom maps, etc.

Hopefully admins will not make any rash decisions, may reply to this will be a wall of text, and posted later :)
short reply
Limiting the weapons isn’t always a good idea, you close the community to fresh blood.
Perhaps now is the time to make major changes, and btw having two competitions, with two rule sets, wont necessarily split the community, as alot of teams will enter both competitions
fair points gibbs, but people will stick to ETF2L only due to the fact that its ETF2L
its like those stars who are only known because they are famous
nevertheless, as long as it offers the variety of teams it does, im happy with it
It’s a shame the OP did not focus solely on what to do about the garbage added to the game. Hopefully there will be fewer posts moaning about prizes/slating Etf2l and most post will refer to the issue of which of the new gameplay-affecting unlocks should be allowed.
My instant reaction is “none of them” but maybe cases can be made for some to be allowed (no idea I;d be fine with none), but kritz, sandwich and natasha were once just updates. There’s a sliding scale of lameness that all updates sit on, which is exactly why a discussion is needed.

I very much like the idea of creating a second league sporting different rules regarding unlocks. But I’d also think it’s a good idea to let teams choose to join not either, but in fact *both*, and as such they are best seperated in season start dates as well!

I feel you completely took my post the wrong way. There was never any slating of ETF2L as such. I merely said, the maths doesn’t add up. The other smaller leagues are stepping up competition making themselves more appealing, why ETF2L is plodding along at the same rate. I’m not slating ETF2L. I’m merely questioning if they are going to step up to the competition and there views on unlocks.
Yeah you didn’t slate the league, I just pictured a rash of posts complaining about this and that, pulling the debate away from valves’ new player-griefing system.
Never understood a league that has so many players and teams can only manage to offer 6 headsets to div1 winners and not get any decent sponsorship :/
I’m looking forward to Wireplay, and I think more should be done to get people to sign up and play there, considering they are actually offering something for winners instead of a pixel trophy.
Gibbz you answered your own question. The smaller leagues are doing it becuae they lack player numbers/interest etf2l already has them all why do they need to compete ? It’s not like everyone is going to leave for esl etc. Although they should
be offering more prizes that’s for sure.
Fucking hate iPhones for typing!!!!!
